Page Four THE VOICE March 26,1981 CAMPAIGN’81 Meet The Candidates In an effort to acquaint our readers with the candidates in the upcoming election, Tim Moore of The Voice staff talked with them during the past week. In order to remain as impartial as possible, Tim formulated two questions that he asked each candidate. The following is the conversation between our repor ter and the candidates. SGA Presidential Candidates Roy Davenport, Cartersville, Georgia, senior Computer Science major Carolyn Johnson, Fayetteville, N.C., junior PoUtical Science major Everett Johnson, Durham, N.C., junior Political Science major Michael Moore, Memphis, Tenn., junior Biology major John Sherrod, Oberlin, Ohio, junior Sociology major Davetter Shepard, Fayetteville, N.C., junior Psychology major Voice: What inspired you to seek election to this office? Roy: It’s somewhat twofold, in that primarily the reason why I’m running again is the fact that I’m going to be here. You see, I could graduate in May, but my major is math and computer science and I want to go to Law school. So I feel that I need to take some more English and Reading courses to get prepared for Law school. So this means that I’ll be here for another year. The knowledge that I have obtained and the experience that I have acquired during my duration of the term thus far and with persuasion and discussion with other persons involved to help me make my decisions. I feel that I can help carry on a lot of the positive things that we have started. Carolyn: I can’t say that one specific thing inspired me to run, a com bination of things inspired me both on and off campus, such as my personal background compounded with the tremendous urge to help people and to also help myself. I think it’s about time for us to get dedicated people in our elected offices. The SGA President’s office in the past has been monopohzed by people on “glory” trips, people wanting to be in this office just so they can have the title of President. I think that we need someone that wants to be president and help the students on this campus. I also think that I can help motivate the students to work, and work together. Everett: Well, in my freshman year I worked with the SGA and I’ve seen a lot of changes take place. For us to move forward, I think that we need somebody in the office that has experience. I’ve worked there, so I think that if I become president, it would indeed allow us to move forward. MlcVtae\: A number of things inspired me. First of all, it is a known fact that a poorly qualified contingent of individuals have misrepresented the students of this institution. I would like to see a more positive image of the student body cast before the administration, the community, and most impor tantly, the students themselves. Preferably in the form of myself as SGA President, along with my administration. Secondly, the conversation I’ve had with a number of my peers indicates to me that seeking office would be a smart move. John: After being involved with the SGA for three years I have noticed many shortcomings. I truly feel that the knowledge that I have gained through life’s experiences and experiences here on campus could be put to good use as the SGA President. I also believe that the students should run the SGA and that the President is just their voice. Davetter: During the past three years I have observed that past presidents really had no solid communications link with the bulk of the student body. This is especially true as it relates to off-campus students. Presidents in the past have been president for special occassions, ie. Homecoming, etc. I con tend that we must have a president for the entire year. A president must have ability to lead, I have that abihty. I have time to devote to this office. I owe no allegiance to any special interest group, I intend to serve the entire student body. Voice: if elected, what are some of the things you plan to do? Roy: I will mainteun my present format which is to unify the student body as well as the university family as a whole. Entailed in that is to try and unify Fayetteville State and the community once again. In other words, the only thing that I’ll be able to do is carry out what we started. Carolyn: If elected, what I’ll try to do is broaden the communications bet ween the on and off campus students and try to get them more involved in campus work. One cannot make any promises of moving people. Some people say that we need more lights and others say we need better employees. What I mean by better employees is that, the students feel that presently, for example, when you enter a office on campus, the people in that office are not very con cerned with the needs of the student, they act as if they are doing us a favor. Before these kinds of issues can be attacked, we must have a strong ad ministration, and this is one of our first goals. Everett: Well, if I do get the job, I would come with the programs that I’ve been working on. One of those programs is a health care program. Another one is a program wTftre-A&^will have communications for all the students. In this program, we’ll use the^ocal media as a means of informing the off- campus students, as well as the community of whats going on on our campus. In addition to that, we’ll also use the Information Center on campus for this same purpose. These are just two of the things I plan to do if I get elected to office of President. Michael: I plan simply to make no big promises I can’t live up to and deal effectively with any important issue that faces me as president and as a representative of the student body. John: One of my main plans will be to bridge the gap between Ad ministration and the SGA and the total student body. I believe that in order for the SGA to be totally effective there must be a good working relationship with the Administration. I also plan to find a way to get more students in volved in the missions and issues facing the SGA. The SGA is only as strong as the student body. Davetter: Number one, I would like to see a better relationship between the administration and students. Number two, I would like to see a much better relationship between the faculty/staff and students. It is time that we get in the proper perspective why we are here. Students come to FSU to get an education. It is the job of the faculty to provide a proper learning environment to enhance the education process. It is important to remember that if we had no students, there would not be a need for a staff. Employees of this university are here to provide a service. I am not trying to win a popularity contest. 1 don’t need to make my resume look good. I am 60-years-old and retired. I can and will take all the time that is necessary to make this office responsible to the needs of the entire student body. I hope that the students will attend the assembly Tuesday night. At that time I will elaborate further on my platform. SGA Vice-Presidential Candidates David Belgrave, New York, junior Physical Education major Myra Crouch {The Voice was unable to contact Ms. Crouch) Voice: What would you say David, inspired you to run for office? David: The fact that I’m presently Junior Class President and like working with people are two main things that inspired me to run for this position. Voice: If elected, what are some of the things you plan to do? David: The first thing that I’m definitely going to do is try to bring unity among students. I feel that unity can be achieved byhaving many meetings and guest speakers. Another thing I plan to do is have morning services in Seabrook Auditorium at least two or three Sundays each month. Being that we have quite a few student ministers on campus, I think they should conduct Sunday services. These services would allow our students to come together in unity and love. Business Manager Candidates Eugene Lowery, New York, junior Business Administration major Bobby Abu Mahdi, sophomore History major Voice: What inspired you to run for this position? Eugene: Well, I felt that FSU’s SGA had been spending its money un wisely. I think that they should get more into cultural activities and not put all their money into music. You see, there is a time for music and a time for culture. Bobby: I’ve been active in SGA since 1979. I’ve been Chief Justice for two years. So it wasn’t so much a matter of being inspired. I’ve put in a lot of hours in the SGA and I know the various jobs. So now. I’m running for Business Manager. Voice: If elected, what are some of the things you plan to do? Eugene: One thing that I plan to do is to try to inspire black speakers to come and speak at our school at the expense of the SGA. I also want to have a better Homecoming than what we’ve been having. Bobby: If elected, I intend to oversee our money and to make sure that it’s spent on the best possible things, such as cultural events. I’d also like to see bigger events brought to FSU. Miss FSU Beverly Edge, Riegelwood, N.C., junior English major Betty Hale, Halifax, N.C., junior Biology major Verona McGuire, Scotland Neck, N.C., junior Ester McLean, Goldsboro, N.C., junior Sociology major Voice: What inspired you to run for this position? Beverly: Since my high school days I have dreamed of being the school’s queen. The day I set foot on the campus of FSU I decided then that I would run for Miss FSU. I’ve done a lot here but not nearly enough. Many accom plishments can be achieved through inspirations such as mine. Betty: My inspiration came from the student body, in that they feel that I’m capable of bringing about a change by representing them as Miss Fayetteville State University. Verone: It has always been in my heart to be a queen, especially at Fayet teville State University. I love being in the spotlight, which every queen will be from time to time. Esther: I was inspired to run by some of my close associates and others who beUeve in me and feel that I am a trustworthy and reliable person. To have someone beheve in you this way is a good feeling. This is what inspired me mainly to run for this position. Miss Rudolph Jones Student Center Candidates Anita Anderson, Goldsboro, N.C., junior Business Administration major Andrea Gatlin {The Fo/'ce was unable to contact Ms. Gatlin) Jannetta McLaurin, Dunn, N.C., freshman Carolyn J. Williams, Henderson, N.C., junior Business Education major Voice: What inspired you to run for this position? Anita: The reason I am running for Miss Student Center is because they need somebody who is quaHfied, dependable, and somebody who gets along with people. I think I am this person for the position. Jannetta: I feel that I come to the center so much and the students don’t know what its really for, so I have a lot of ideas to improve the student center itself, welcoming incoming students and the old as well. Carolyn: Because I am interested in the welfare of the students, like working with different students and most of all I have a lot of ideas to con tribute. Especailly for visiting students and parents.
