FSU’s golf team, seve;i time CIAA
champions, is still burning hot and
taking the medals. The talent on this
fine team is so great that they may be
on their way towards yet another
championship. According to seven
time Coach of the Year, Moses
Walker, we have three empty spots to
fill. He states that, “we have some fine
players, but we lack the strength to
compete as a team.” This problem
came about as the Bronco team lost
three key players; Johnny Vaughn,
Gregory Pridgeon, and Steve
Coleman. With these three powerful
golfers, we had a very powerful team.
Their departure left us with three
golfers, Riccardo Stevens, Toney Terry
and team captain, Radell Miller, who
continued to consistently rank medalist
honors.
Miller is looked to as a leader, for he
has been a Bronco since 1978. His ex
perience is very valuable to this team.
Stevens, last year’s CIAA regular
season medalist champion is a
sophomore. He has recently become a
Philadelphia Open winner. This is an
amateur tournament open to college
golfers across the country. Terry,
whose brother Ron Terry, is a
professional golfer, is the 1979-80
medalist champion.
Because of these three fine players,
according to Coach Walker, “we are
able to compete for the medalist spots,
but we need four players to compete as
a team.” All is not lost though, for this
year’s team has four new additions.
Newly added members are Ronald

FSU’s Tennis team has had a season
of ups and downs. Although there have
been more downs than ups at this
point, this team seems to have the
capability to come back and do some
positive things for the remainder of the
season.
In their first two matches, the Bron
cos were at home against J.C. Smith
and Shaw University. They dropped
the opener by a score of 8-1, but rallied
back with a victory over Shaw of 7-2.

On April 12, 1981, the Lady Broncos
basketball team of FSU, (who finished
their season with a very impressive 24-5
record) was commended for a very suc
cessful season through a joint effort on
the part of the brothers of Nun Phi
Nun and BoJangles Famous Chicken
and Biscuit restaurant. This illustrious
event took place at the Bojangles
location off Bragg Boulevard. The
Lady Broncos were treated to dinner of
their choice and drinks at Bojangles.
Also, these ladies were awarded a
plaque in conjunction with this dinner
to further commend their outstanding
season. The plaque read: “In Ap
preciation to the LADY BRONCOS
for an Outstanding Season 24-5 From
Nun Phi Nun and Bojangles 1980-81.”
Mr. Victor Neismith (Nun Phi Nun)
Tony Terry
Spicer, Hosea Givens, Kenneth Tin
sley, and Jessie Moss. During this
month alone, they will have to take on
the Livingstone College tournament,
the NAIA, and the CIAA. Coach
Walker feels that his top three, all
having averages of 76, will do fine. Ac
cording to him, “Livingstone will give
me a chance to see where the others
stand.” Also in Livinstone, Coach
Walker will face Andre Springs, a one
time Bronco himself who bought
medals to the Broncos in the 1977-78
season.
Coach Walker thinks that St.
Augustines’ and J.C. Smith are the
teams to beat in the finals. The Bron
cos don’t intend to lose out, but accor
ding to Coach Walker, “if we do lose
out, it may serve as inspiration to other
schools. We have been a dominant for
ce for so long, I would hate to see
others stop trying.” But I know this
Bronco team can pull it off, they have
done it so well so many times before.
We here at FSU are going to be right
behind them all-the-way to the top.
Livingstone, lost to Winston-Salem 8-
1, and were shut out by last year’s
Southern Regional Champs, St.
Augustine by a score of 9-0. In the next
two home matches, against NC Central
and Winston-Salem, FSU dropped
both matches by a score of 8-1.
The team then traveled to Barber-
Scotia where they pulled off their first
shut-out of the season, 9-0. The
Livingstone Bears defeated the Bron
cos in the following contest at home by
a score of 6-3, but the Broncos came
back with a carbon copy of the Barber-
Scotia match at home by demoralizing
that team with another shut-out. The
Bears of Shaw Universty defeated the
Broncos in a road contest 6-3.
Morehouse College won the match
stated that, “The ladies basketball
season was overlooked by Fayetteville
State.” He feels that the ladies deserve
some sort of appreciation for such an
impressive seasonal record, and even
though the season has been over for
quite some time, Mr. Neismith says,
“it’s better late than never.”
Mr. Del Covington, Bojangles
manager, feels that his restaurant is a
“student fallout” of sorts and ap
peared overly anxious to assist in this
event. Mr. Covington said that, “two
FSU students tried to break a record by
coming into Bojangles 97 straight
days.” He appreciates this type of
business and hopes to keep this type of
relationship with FSU students. Mr.
Neismith is quoted as saying,
“Bojangles is one of the only
businesses in Fayetteville to take an in
terest in Fayetteville State University
and supports it this way.” He further
states that, “I hope this event will en
courage more businesses to show more
interest in FSU as our students do
provide for a great majority of
business for lots of them.”
Coach Edwards and several team
players spoke at this event. Coach Ed
wards agrees that her team was
overlooked, but says, “We intend to
come back with a positive attitude and
do the same thing next year.” She
praised her team highly and gave
special recognition to several players.
She also gave recognition to Mr. Henry
Thomas, Jr., who she says assisted her
greatly this season. Coach Edwards ex
tended her sincere thanks to Nun Phi
Nun and Bojangles.
Lady Broncos Softball
The Lady Bronco softball team is
really on the “ball” this season. They
seem to have the stuff that champions
are made of and if they continue to
perform as well as they have thus far,
they will indeed become champions, at
least in the CIAA.
This team (at press time) has ac
cumulated a 10-8 overall record and a
9-5 conference record. They started
their season by defeating J.C. Smith
twice by scores of 15-3 and 14-5. After
that, they defeated Methodist College
9-6 in their first meeting. The ladies
then went into what Coach Maceo
Smith calls an “offensive slump” . The
Broncos lost the next four games as
Methodist returned to beat them by a
score of 5-3. NC A&T defeated the
FSU team twice with scores of 8-7 and
8-3. Next on the schedule was Winston-
Salem who shut the Lady Broncos out
by a score of 7-0.
After that loss, the team renewed
their awesome attack and crushed
Shaw University by a score of 14-7. As
if this wasn’t enough, the Broncos,
determined to make up for the four
losses, defeated St. Augustine twice by
scores of 9-8 and 7-1. They didn’t stop
there, they then defeated last season’s
champs, Virginia State.
Coach Smith, in her second year as
head coach of this team, is very pleased
with the performance of the team. She
is proud of the job the Redding sisters
are doing. Rose (FR) and Jackie (JR)
have been a great asset to this team
both offensively and defensely. Presen
tly Jackie is out with a knee injury, but
according to Coach Smith, Rose is
holding things down.
As of now, the Lady Broncos are
second in the Southern Division, Win
ston-Salem currently leads the division.
The CIAA Softball Tournament will
be held on May 1 & 2 in Elizabeth City.
The tournament will feature the four
best teams from each division. If the
season continues as well as it has, FSU
ladies will be there, and should bring
back a victory.
Lady Broncos
against FSU 9-0.
The remainder of this season the
Broncos will be on the road. There are
iwo games left before tournament
play. At press time, the team is
engaged in the NAIA District 26
Championship in Greensboro. The
CIAA Southern Division Champion
ship will be in Winston-Salem on April
Girls Softball Team
25-26. The team will then travel to
Elizabeth City for the CIAA Con
ference Championship on May 1-2.
Coach Page Saunders feels that the
team has the potential, and he hopes
that they can make it work in the tour
nament. None of the members of this
year’s team will be lost so there are
high hopes for next year.
