April 23,1981 THE VOICE Page? Result of War By RONALD L JONES Papa went over the ocean To fight in this man’s war. He stayed over there for two years - He’s back now and I wish he’d stayed. He can’t sleep at night For nightmares rule his mind. I’m afraid that one day He may hurt himself - or us. Mom is scared and wants to leave. I am scared and I want out, too. Little sister is too young to understand and I’m glad, for her sake, that she doesn’t. I really want to help Papa. But I’m still young - what can I do? He doesn’t hear anything that Any of us say to him. I give up - he’s beyond my help And I’m too scared - to keep bothering him. So Hke Mom and Sis I’m leaving Dad to his nightmares And his memories of the past. Silent Cry By PEPPI BURGESS I thought if I held and kissed the lips of another it would release me from your hold, but all I can do is remember, your smile Your sweet warm brown eyes, your touch Oh I want you so much But you have gone I guess...may be reality was to much for your illusion to take so you took the steps out of my life never to return When I think of that (never to return) The stream of tears fill my eyes You and no other can make me feel What is expected from the well dressed woman of today? The answer was much easier for the woman of yesterday - a pretty dress and an adorable smile (with a closed mouth) and PRESTO! a well dressed woman. Today, women want to keep some standards of yesterday’s woman while at the same time being recognized as an intellectual woman of today. They refused to be thought of as objects to be seen and not heard. What styles, colors, and fabrics do women take into consideration when they dress? I beUeve there are two ways women want to be looked upon - feminine but professional, or professional but feminine. Let’s take a look at being feminine but professional. There are certain colors and fabrics which help to obtain this image. Soft fabrics and the lighter colors may help. Colors such as off whites, pale pinks and the like always help to give a woman a feminine and/or innocent appearance. Add to this a stylish pants accord or skirt, blouse, jacket and tie combination and this particular look could be yours. On the other hand, if it is a woman’s desire to project the professional side, she may want to express herself in darker, more traditional colors and medium to heavy weight materials to obtain the designs which project a businessHke attitude. I’ve asked some of the male students of FSU whom they think are the better dressed female students and why these persons stand out in their minds. Then I asked the women whose names were mentioned for their philosophies on being well dressed. Reginald iVlcLean ■ “When I look this way I hope you, happiness Because loving you made me feel alive But now hurt is my companion. I hope and pray that you see your way back to me. I hold thy memories so precious You have become my last hope because you stole the beat of my lonely heart Such a wonderous jewel taken my heart will never live again But I shall never stop hoping that you will return. Please...come back when the moon is full and when your illusion and reality become as one! School Days By THOMAS WALTERS Coming in numbers to get in the groove Guided by thoughts of the future in which we move Trying to get all the knowledge from the books into your mind School days, right on time Going to class and coming out And checking on the activities without a doubt Sometimes wondering what we are doing here Hoping to one day make some cold cash is all so very clear Finding a new lover or just ragging down It’s all a part of school days, right on time The Beauty of You By CHUCK KING Some guys only see beauty on a woman with a pretty face. They scan her from head to toe seeing that the rest is in place. The facial beauty you do possess By EMANUEL VAUGHN JR. at a woman, I look for her true beauty. As for her clothing, I look for seasonable fashion and the coor dination of her outfit. While I think clothing is a very important factor, it is not everything a woman has to offer. Some of the young ladies who exem plify what I look for in a well dressed woman are Deborah Currie, Vanessa CoUins, Dineen Morton, Faye Baldwin and Genevive Shaw.” Chris Foster ■ “There are four young ladies who stand out in my mind as being well dressed on a daily basis. They are Vanessa Collins, Dineen Mor ton, Steneice Wilson and Cheryl Ad dison. All four of these young ladies seem to dress professionally with the right touch of feminine qualities.” Brian Jones - “Dineen Morton, Verona McGuire, Kai Watson, and Cheryl Addison are four young ladies who have class in their manner of dressing. I find them to be sexually, yet morally appealing.” Tony Jones • “Verona McGuire, Cheryl Addison, Bridgette Barnes, and Dineen Morton - these ladies dress in a neat manner at all times and most im portantly, their clothes fit them correc tly. Their personalities match their ac cords What I mean is - they have ladylike qualities.” Here is what the young ladies had to say about their philosophies on dressing well; Deborah Currie • “I dress to satisfy myself. I Hke to impress others, but it’s not my main goal. The type of clothing I wear consists of mostly jackets and slacks. This helps me to obtain the executive look I’m striving for. I want to be looked at as being independent.” Vanessa Collins - “Part of my maturity is exemplified by the way I and the rest is great looking too! But to me they can’t compete with the real beauty of you. A charming inviting personality sending off magnetic waves. The cheerfulriess in your presence a hectic day it saves. You smile and the sun rises even when cloudy outside, Rays of happiness so bright a blind man they could guide. Physical beauty is evident and care for yourself you do. But still they cannot be compared to the real beauty of you... Flowing Harmony By EMANUEL VAUGHN JR. I sit and listen to words of the air which surrounds my heart and causes me to remember the joy of being I sing quietly hoping the entire univer sal pitch of love will invite me into its homage Upon my standing proud I realize That the sweet being of my thoughts will forever grace my mind Hold on tight to whatever moments you must, for I shall do the same and find happiness in doing so Search your heart, and flowing in the stream of life you shall find a thought and feeling of my ever lasting presence. Our Literary Editor.. •Valery Frazier, is graduating this year and The Voice takes this opportunity to wish her much success in all her future en deavors. We appreciate the fine job she has done during the past four years. dress. Dressing well helps to express my inner qualities and enables me to take pride in myself emotionally and physically. I get the most satisfaction by seeing myself appreciated in the eyes of others.” Steneice Wilson - “I feel that the style of clothing plays a very important role to each individual. In choosing clothes for myself, I look for the qualities that suit my personality. I wear clothes that make me feel comfor table and, at the same time, give me an attractive feeling.” Bridgette Barnes - “I just Hke to be myself and I do this by dressing casually. Really, I like to be looked at for my feminine qualities. My everyday casual apparel include designer jeans, mostly flat shoes, a small amount of- make-up, and matching accessories.” Dineen iViorton • “Among other things, I feel that the way a woman dresses molds her personality. Dressing well has become a natural habit to me and color coordination is especially important. My purpose is only to please myself, but naturally if I am im pressing someone else, that is flat tering, also. But it doesn’t motivate the way I dress.” Verona IVicGuire - “I dress to mat ch my moods. I hardly ever wear jeans, but I do wear slacks. When a man looks at me I want him to see me as being pretty but professional. Being pretty is not everything - a person’s at titude is also important.” Women today have a new outlook about themselves and want to be respected totally. No matter what field she is in, a woman should carry herself differently from a man. Although her accomplishments may be the same, her qualities are different. Thinking of You BySHARONJ. BRYANT The miles between us sometimes sad den me. They even cause me to feel discouraged, and pessimistic. Yet when I concentrate on YOU and not the miles between us, the wonderful memories we share make all the dif ference in the world I realize that God makes everything beautiful in His time. I know we will be together soon. Fashion Review By EMANUEL VAUGHN JR. The essence of Beauty Fashion Club of FSU, put on a fashion show March 23. The theme was “High Energy”. Although the turn out was not a very large one, the students and general public, who were there, seemed to en joy, for the most part, what they were seeing. The garments that were displayed were of good taste. They ranged from the simple to the complex. Many of the models added their own accessories to the outfits in order to add individuality to their outfits. I’m sure many of the spectators gained a few new ideals for their own personal wardrobes. At the conclusion of the fashion show I asked several spectators to share with me their opinions of the show. Angeline Wright (student at Terry Sanford H.S.) “It was nice, I really enjoyed Katie Melvin, (Miss Essence of Beauty).” Jonathan Fant - “The show was nice, I only wish more students would support the club. I loved the outfits.” Panelphia Bennett - “It was cute, more students should have attended.” Valerie Strayhorn - “Thus far it has V>eeTV er^joysi\D\e Vtyv \.ooV.\-nLg, fox- ward to seeing the remainder of the show.” I asked Miss Strayhorn her opinion of the lasthalf of the show and she said, “The second half was just as elegant as the first, all of the models were great.” Tami Belle - “The models seemed not to have their act together. Some of them didn’t seem to be modeling material, they seemed to be running through everything. They also need to work on the proper way of walking. Tanya Wilds stood out in my mind as being one of the best female models. All of the male models were o.k.” Dineen Morton - “I thought it was awful. The music didn’t seem to go with the scenes and the models were paying too much attention to what the audience was doing. I was shocked when 1 saw Reginald McLean chewing gum on stage, that, didn’t look professional at all.” Vanessa Collins - “Some parts of it were o.k., but the models went through it much too fast. I just couldn’t beheve one of the models was chewing gum on stage.” I was really impressed by the stage setting and the basic floor-plan used, although, performances of the models did not compHment the floor-plan on a continuous basis. Many of the models seem to need more elementary walking lessons and destintive posing methods. Yes, the walking was fast, which is o.k. It was the actual posing which needed to be slowed down to enable the audience to see what the commentator was trying to describe. There were models who performed well and they along with those who didn’t perform very well I will not mention, because, 1 beUeve any group is only as good as its worst member. I’m sure the members of the Essence of Beauty were not satisfied with their performances overall. I know the group will settle down and gain true control of them selves. Fashion Conscious Woman
