January 28,1982 The Voice Page 7 SPORTS n Lady Broncos Photo By John Henderson Currently... Lady Broncos...Dazzling By Derrick Eddie Most of you have noticed the way our Lady Broncos have been blasting opponents off the floor. One cannot help but wonder if the Lady Broncos are perhaps invincible. Suffering only one non-conference loss, the Lady Broncos have defeated every other op ponent, establishing a sparkling record of 13-1 overall and 10-0 in the CIAA. They have beaten the CIAA’s best- Virginia Union and Norfolk State. The Panthers of Virginia Union won the 1981 CIAA Women’s Championship. They defeated Norfolk State for that coveted title. We must not forget that the Lady Broncos won the CIAA title in 1070 and will probably be the best bet to win the title in 1982. Head Coach Yvonne D. Edwards (37-6 overall), has entered her second year at the helm of the Lady Broncos and has established herself as a coaching dynasty. Her Lady Broncos went 14-5 last year and lost a chance to go to Kansas City for the NAIA Championship by a much improved University of South Carolina Aiken basketball team in the NAIA Area Tournament hosted by Fayetteville State. The dazzling aspects of this years’ basketball team are that the Lady Broncos are playing a more team orien ted type of game with senior and junior players that are second to none. Dianthia Morris, senior forward from New Jersey, is another dazzling aspect of the Lady Bronco fortunes. Averaging around 22.5 points per game and 7 rebounds, Morris is the best forward in the CIAA. The dynamix duo of Concentha Smith S’ll from Norfolk, VA, and Anne Shingfield 5’9, from Goldsboro, NC adds excitement and enthusiam to the guard positions. Sherlyn Drayton’s automatic stan dstill long range shot makes basketball fans wonder why the three-point play is not for the women also. All of those ingredients and a fairly smart coaching staff adds to one of the greatest women’s basketball team probably in the country. Dianthia Morris (No. 24) -Head and shoulders above the rest. Broncos Pat A Whipping On Nation’s Best By Derrick Eddie The date was January 19, the place Lilly Gymnasium on the campus of Fayetteville State University. The event: the nation’s number one NCAA Division I Basketball team (Virginia Union University), versus unranked and unrecognized Fayetteville State University. Two years ago, the Broncos of Fayetteville State lost to Virginia Union 59-54 in regular season play and then played the Panthers in Norfolk, VA in the first round of the 1980 CIAA Tournament. In that tournament, the Broncos and the Panthers battled in a classic matchup that went into three overtimes. In three overtimes, the Pan thers defeated the Broncos and then went on to not only win the 1980 Cen tral Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament but also the 1980 NCAA Division II National Championship downing Florida Southern 58-56 for all the gold. Last year, Virginia Union defeated the Broncos in Richmond VA 82-79. This year, Bonny McNeil scored 39 points and Fayetteville State University dominated Virginia Union 81-59. Virginia Union coach Dave Robbins had never lost to a Fayetteville State team since he has been a coach in the CIAA. Little did he know or expect that he would lose to the Broncos this time. As a matter of fact no one in the black college sporting world even dreamed Fayetteville State could even stay close to the CIAA’s number one defensive team. But when any team plays the Broncos in Lilly Gym, anything can happen and usually does. During the Broncos 1979-80 basket ball season, they went 10-0 in Lilly P Bonny McNeil, FSU’s leading scorer, is shown here against Virginia Union. (Photo by John Henderson) Gym going 12-14 overall and defeating nationally ranked Norfolk State and Johnson C. Smith decisively in the Lilly Gym. Currently, the Broncos are 11-3 overall, 7-2 in the CIAA defeating Livingstone College and St. Augustine’s after their upset of the previously unbeaten Panthers of Virginia Union. They are currently tied with Winston-Salem State for first place in the CIAA Southern Division. It’s beginning to look like the year 1973 when the Broncos of Fayetteville State won the CIAA Championship in the Greensboro Coliseum. IViiller Sponsors One-On-One Basketball College students, who usually sit in the stands and dream of being Dr. J or Pete Maravich, had a chance last week to bring their fantasies to life when Miller Brewing Company and Smithson’s Beverage brought their first Annual Miller High Life One-on-One Basketball Tournament to Fayetteville State University. The competition is open to any graduate or undergraduate students who have not lettered in collegiate basketball. Participants engage in a five minute basketball game, played on a halfcourt with the first player to reach ten points, or who is leading by at least two points Tjefore the time limit expires, declared the winner. The Single Elimination Tournament featured forty-five par ticipants. Presently, the tournament is being held at the Women’s Gymnasium of the campus of FSU. The final four players will compete for the Championship during the half- time of the Fayetteville State Univer sity-North Carolina Central basketball game on January 31, 1982. The tournament winner will receive a $200.00 scholarship award and a trophy. Where winners cannot accept the award because of financial assistance restrictions, the money is donated to their school’s athletic department. Second, third, and fourth place win ners will also receive trophies. The top fifty finishers will receive a pair of Miller High Life athletic tube socks, and a One-on-One jersey.
