The Broncos were unable to contain the passing attack of the Firebirds, led by Dwayne “The Bomber” Butler, who rolled up 225 yards in the air. The Broncos scored six and mustered 147 yards total offense, ten through the air, while the defense held UDC to a minus twenty-one yards rushing. The Firebirds scored first in the opening quarter on a 46 yards field goal by Joe Wilkes who set a school record. In the second quarter, “The Bomber”, named because of his long passes, hit Barry Tolliver for a 60 yards touchdown pass. Besides his 60 yards toss, he had scoring tosses of 30 yards to Wayne Jefferies and a nine yard touchdown pass to Darnell White. The Broncos fought their way on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Gary Moore hit the middle of the Firebirds line, went eighteen yards, and fumbled. Steve Gilliam, being on the alert, grabbed the fumbled fall beyond the line of scrimmage and jaunted 65 yards to complete a 83 yard play and the Bronco's only score. Despite the touchdown, the game belonged to the Firebirds from the opening kickoff Their defense caused the Broncos' offense to commit eight turnovers, six of them pass interceptions. Steve Pettus, robbed the Bronco's receivers of three passes and returned one for a 35 yard touchdown. The Bronco's defense, lead by Kevin Martin, Kenneth McRae, Wayne Kinston and Steve Armstrong, tried to keep FSU in the game, but the UDC offense scored almost at will and nailed the coffin shut. Broncos' Kevin Martin was the bright spot for the defense. For the evening, he had two blocked field goals, five solos Letters, Resumes, College Papers, Manuscripts, etc. Fast, letter perfect, reasonable. SMITH H 8:00 Winston-Salem State A 7:30 Feb. 23-26 CIAA Tournament in Norfolk (Scope), Virginia We Beat Ourselves By Manuel Blackmon This year and for the last three years Fayetteville State has had a losing football season. The main reason for this is simply “We Beat Ourselves.”The blame should not totally be directed to the players and coaches but also to the student body and faculty. Every year there is a influential, negative output by the students. How can a athlete play at his best ability when there are less than half of the student body present at home games? Coach William Head, the head football coach for the Broncos, stated that he was disappointed in the team this year and it seemed as though everytime the team wanted to win something killed them. However, the Broncos are not dead! Coach Head has positive thoughts about next year and the term will work hard this winter getting stronger and faster which will put them in a position to improve. James Jones, a defensive back, stated that a key element in any successful athletic program is the alumni and administrative support. At FSU the team doesn't receive this kind of support. It seems as though many put in minimum input but expect the maximum output of our athletic program. The teams have too many graduates leaving this institution and never looking back. The football team apologizes to the students and faculty of FSU for this past season and urge your support next year. Remember “We Bet Ourselves”! Smith Golden Bulls Saturday, November 13. The Golden Bulls initial score came when a bad pitch by quarterback Walter Seldon was mishandled by Greg Gunn and rolled into the end zone. Golden Bulls' Harold Amos recovered the ball and Anthony Wickers added the extra point to give the visiting club a 7-0 edge. From that point, the Broncos proved they were still consistent by committing three more turnovers that allowed the Golden Bulls to score 24 more points for the evening. Turnovers have plagued the Broncos all season. For the year, they have committed 47 miscues, 34 which have resulted in some type of score for the opponents. Gary Moore, replacing Reggie Williams (Williams on injury reserve) as starting running back scored the Broncos first touchdown when he went around left end for 14 yards for his first touchdown run of the year. Moore was also the game leading rusher with 116 yards on 24 carries. Arnold Milliken, pullback for the Broncos, also had a productive evening with 73 yards on nine carries. The final score came with 3:47 left in the game when Bronco quarterback, Walter Seldon, hit, wide receiver, Martin Johnson, with a 46 yard scoring pass, the longest of the season by a Bronco quarterback. The Broncos ended their season with a 2-8 and 2-5 in CIAA action.
