Fall Sports Wrap-up By Marion Crowe With football season winding down and basketball season is making its appearance, all that is left for the Broncos' fans is the final statistical wrap-up of the football season. Although the team did not fare as well as the supporters would have liked, the Broncos, 2-8 overall and 2-5 in CIAA action, did not end their season as bad as their record indicated. In the final statistic released by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Broncos were rated in five of the twelve statistical categories as compiled by their office. The final 1982 CIAA regular season statistical areas that the Broncos were rated is as follows: Rushing Offense: sixth with an average of 154.1 yards per game. Total Offense: seventh with an average of 231.3 yards per game. Scoring: seventh with an average of 14.6 points per game. Defense Against the Rush: sixth, allowing only 137 yards per game. Total Defense: seventh allowing 268.5 yards per game. Three Broncos placed high in the individual categories that were complied by the league. Reggie Williams was the league eighth leading rusher with 472 yards and the team leading scorer with four touchdowns on 98 rushes. Freshman Curtis Jacobs was the league leading kick-off returner with 230 yards and one touchdown for an average of 23 yards per return. Tiny Tracy Alexander, standing 5 ft. 5 inches tall, weighing 155 pounds in his uniform was seventh among the punt returners with an average of 9.5 yards per return. Two Broncos were selected to the All Conference Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association squad. Kevin Martin, the Broncos' defensive tackle. r ^ 3 tU Bertie Wadford was named to the squad first team. Martin was the lone senior from the Broncos selected, and one of the six seniors from the league to make the elite eleven. Joining him on the team was Tyrone Kelley, an offensive guard. Kelley was selected to the All Conference second team. “Martin will be missed next year,” stated Coach William Head when asked of Martin's contributions to the team. “He was not the biggest tackle in the league but his quickness caused his opponents to double team him. Once in the opponents backfield, he could make things happen.” Martin, who wore Number 75, lead the Broncos in quarterback sacks with seven that accounted for 105 yards losses to opponent quarterbacks, fifty-seven tackles and twenty five assisted tackles. The Lady Broncos, under the direction of Coach Maceo Smith, completed their '82 volleyball season with a 9-10 record and 4-6 in the CIAA conference. They traveled to Winston- Salem to participate in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference Volleyball Championship and advanced to the semi-finals before being eliminated by the host team 15-6, 15-11 to put an end to their quest for a championship. In the consolation bracket, the Lady Broncos learned that it took more than determination to win and had to settle for fourth place. Two Lady Broncos, Aniska Butler and Monica Bryant, were selected to the All CIAA Tournament Team. The Cross Country team despite losing several veteran runners finished second to Saint Augustine College in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Cross Country Championship this fall. Although the team had to settle for second place, the Broncos went undefeated in dual meet competition for the third straight year. In five years of dual meet competition, the Broncos' runners have lost only once. Coach Henry “Hank” Darlington gives all the credit to the runners however, the runners give the credit to their coach. Leading runners were, Aubery Streeter, a sophomore from Kinston, North Carolina; freshman. Tod Towns, veteran runner and senior, Robert Dancy; and sophomore Jacobs Mickle. In addition, Tonja Jones, a high jumper, was converted into a distance runner and Chris Williams was placed in the seventh man position making the Bronco runners a tough team to beat. The prospect for the coming season looks promising. The team's main goal is to bring the national championship to Fayetteville State University. With improved recruitment this can be accomplished. In addition. Coach Darlington would like to see the female athletes participate in cross country. BRONCOS WIN TOURNAMENT By Marion Crowe The Broncos notched their first win of the '82 basketball season December 11 with a 119-97 win over Vorhees Tigers of Denmark, South Carolina in the opening round of the Fayetteville Business League Tournament in Lilly Gym. Like in the previous six losses, the Broncos played good ball, but the difference in this game was the ability to hit foul shots, especially the front end of one-and-one situation. The game was decided with 10:30 remaining. Marvin Hardy hit five 15- foot jumpers for the Broncos to give FSU's a huge lead. Broncos John Sylverster, scoring only four points in the first half, connected on six straight baseline shots in the early going of the second half to help increase the Broncos' lead. The Tigers jumped to an early 4-0 lead on baskets by Johnny Alls and Tim McLead, but two quick Broncos' baskets cut Vorhees dominance short. From that point, the Broncos reeled off sixteen straight points, 12 by Curtis Jefferson, to set the stage for FSU's rout. At this point, the well pleased Coach Jake Ford cleared his bench. Leading scorers for the Broncos were Curtis Jefferson 26, John Sylverster 24 and Doug Singleton with 13. In the opening game of the tournament, Shaw University defeated Fort Bragg 110-90. William “Tree” Person showed why he was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, Sunday, December 12 and lead the Broncos to a 87-75 victory over Shaw University in the finals of the Fayetteville Business League Tip-Off Tournament. Person, a junior from Nesmith, South Carolina, scored 22 points and grabbed 23 rebounds to take the tournament honor. At halftime, the Broncos held a 41-38 advantage but a 9-0 spurt by Broncos Person and Doug Singleton got FSU started in the second half. With 11:07, Person five foot jumper put the Broncos in the contest and they managed to increase the lead to 63-47. The win is the second in a row for the Broncos after losing the first six contests of the early season. In addition to Person, contributing to the Broncos' win were Curtis Jefferson and Doug Singleton with 21 points each and Marvin Hardy with 17 points. “Tree” takes it to the hoop—William “Tree” Person, Most Valuable Player of the Fayetteville Business League Tournament shows his “StufF’ against Pembroke State University. The Lady Broncos playing at home (Lilly Gym) for the first time this season before approximately 330 fans held a 33-32 halftime lead. Johnson C. Smith opened the second half with eight straight points to take a 40-33 lead. With 16:32, baskets by Annetta J^aulcon and Veronica Stewart started a . surge that allowed the Lady Broncos to tie the score. From that point, clutch foul shooting and repeated turnovers by J.C. Smith enabled the local ladies to roll to their second conference victory. The Lady Broncosjumpedtoanearly 10-0 lead in the first four minutes of their contest against the Winston-Salem Lady Rams December 6 and coasted to a 95-80 win. At one point, the Lady Broncos held a 28-6 edge, but cheap fouls and turnovers, all of which led to timely baskets by the Lady Rams, allowed them to keep the game close. Fayetteville State's sweethearts committed fourteen turnovers in the first half, twelve which were in the last ten minutes. Coach Mary Lamb was pleased with her team's performance December 8 as the Lady Broncos demolished Saint Paul's Tigeretts 100-44.
