Page 12 The Voice April 28. 1983 A Look At The Athlete By Cindy WiHiams Gary Robinson is a senior at Fayetteville State University who majors in Math-Computer Science. (Photo by Rosemary Byrd) As you might expect, Gary finds it difficult at times, being a family man, a student and self-empolyed, to participate in student activities. However, Gary has found time to become a member of the Broncos' golf team, a sport he enjoys. Gary graduated from Reid Ross High School and entered the work force befoe attending Fayetteville Technical Institute (FTI). After graduating from FTl with an Associate Degree in Data Processing, he entered Fayetteville State University. Since his enrollment at Fayetteville State University, Gary has been on teh Dean's List and has maintained a Grade Point Average of 3.3. He was recently recommended by the Registrar's Office to the Nation Dean's List. As a member of the Broncos' golf team, Gary has won the Fayetteville/ Cumberland County Golf Tournament and the Gates Four Golf Tournament. In, addition, he has won numerous other awards. The golf team has been unbeaten in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (ClAA) play for eight seasons. Gary feels the team will continue its winning traditions and acknowledges that players Lonnie McNeil, Tony Terry and Greg Outlaw will make a great contribution to the team's goals. Gary's future is uncertain at the present. He has been approached by several professional agencies to represent them this summer in te Space Coast Golf Tournament. Gary stated that he would wait and see how his golf performance is this spring before accepting any invitation. Smith Named To Kodak District Team By Marion Crowe Earlier, Smith (called C.C.) was selected the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Player-of-the- Year and named to the league All Conference Team. (Photo by John Henderson) Fayetteville State University's to her achievements this year when it was announced by the Women's Basketball Association that she was selected to the Kodak All District III Women's Basketball Team. The selection by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association serves as a prelude to the nomination to the Kodak All American Women's Basketball Team. Those selected to the All American Team wll be notified later this month. Smith, a senior, majoring in physical education, was the nation's third leading scorer with an average of 27.2 points per game. In addition, Concetha was the Broncos leading scorer and highlighted her season by scoring 41 points against Elizabeth City State College, a carer and school high. Clinic By Marion Crowe Fayetteville State University Athletic Department and the Center for Continuing Education will sponsor a one-day football clinic April 23 for all football coaches in the Cape Fear area. Speaking at the clinic will be Pine Forest head football coach Jean Worthington, Newberry College head coach, Clayton Johnson, Reid Ross High School head coach. John Daskal; South Carolina State College defensive coach. Buddy Pough; Livingston College head coach, Mel Rose; Fayetteville State University's assistant coach and athletic trainer, Andrew Powell; and Seventy-First's head coach, Bobby Poss. Fayetteville State head football coach William “Bull” Head states that the clinic will provide the coaches with realistic and knowledgeable informa tion. The clinic will terminate the same day the Broncos conclude their preseason training. The Broncos started their spring drills March 14. Long Beach Road Race The Long Beach, North Carolina Parks and Recreation Department and the Oak Island San Poundera Running Club will be holding the 2nd Oak Island Five and One Mile Fun Run on Saturday, May 7, at 8:00 a.m. in Long Beach beginning at the Recreation Center. Last year's male winner of the 5 Mile was Bill Fairley of Southport with a time of 29:01.5 and the female winner was Beth Carter of Wilmington with a time of 35:36.6. The course this year will be run totally on pavement except for 40 feet on either side of the Scenic Walk way which will be crossed during the 5 Mile run. Lady Broncos Lose Twice 'By Marion Crowe The Lady Broncos, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association defending champion, opened their '83 softball season March 23 on a sour note and fell to Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls 8-4. The Broncoettes, in a game delayed for approximately two hours, were never able to mount any type of a treat against the strong hitting Golden Bulls. Together with the gift presented by the Broncoettes, Johnson C. Smith Golden BUlls put together a 14 hitting attack and came away with the easy win. The Lady Broncos eliminated the mistakes made in the first, but still lost the second contest 9-8 due to their inability to put together any hitting. Leading batters for the Lady Broncos were Sharon Jones 4 for 8; Sandy Powers 2 for 4; Kay White, 2 for 3 and Nellie King 2 for 4. By Marion Crowe Fayetteville State University's golf team is off to another outstanding season under the leadership of Coach Ralph Burns. The Bronco golfers, lead by medalest Gary Robinson, Lonnie McNeil, Greg Outlaw and Tony Terry captured the Shaw Invitational Golf Tournament March 27, 28, 29. As a team, the Broncos compiled a score of 637 over the par-72 course. On March 21-22, the golfers annexed third place in the 9th Annual Edisto Golf Classic at the Hillcrest Golf Course in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Medalest for the Broncos were Gary Robinson and Tony Terry.
