FSU holds 116th
Commencement
Dr. Janies L. Fisher, president of the
Council for Advancement and Support
of Education (CASE) spoke to 349
graduates and their families at
Fayetteville State’s 116th commence
ment, held May 8th in the Cumberland
County Arena.
Dr. Fisher is a registered psychologist
with a PH.D from Northwestern
University. He is the author of three
books, over 100 published articles and
more than 500 newspaper articles,
poems, features, and editorials. In
addition, he is the recipient of five
honorary doctorates and numerous
awards for teaching, citizenship,
writing, speaking, and leadership.
Dr. Fisher called on every college and
university in the country to “consider
ways that they can join together with the
public schools in order to most speedily

affect our improved condition.”
“We must not assume that this is
someone else’s problem,” said Dr.
Fisher. “National organizations should
join in the task. We should bury old
grievances, forge new compacts,
develop designs, and establish specific
and measurable goals.”
He added that even though
government assistance would be needed
by educators, the government should
not be expected to remedy the situation
alone because the wait would result in
lost time. “If the education community
got to work right away,” he noted, “in
less than a year, we could recommend
modified curricula, establish remedial
and evaluative programs, and make
more certain the good future of our
children and our nation.”
In addition to Dr. Fisher’s address,
Fayetteville State University’s Vice
Chancellor of Business Affairs, J. V.
Parham, received an honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters for his service as an
accountant and financial advisor.
