(Photo by Rosemary Byrd) By Marion Crowe The veteran Fayetteville State University golf team succeeded in claiming team and individual honors to capture their tenth Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Golf Championship May 5 - 6 in Hampton, Virgmia. The Broncos won the championship with a 600 total, 24 strokes better than runner up Saint Augustine College. Lonnie McNeil, a senior, won the individual title by defeating teammate Gary Robinson in a one hole sudden death match. In addition to winning the tournament, the Broncos golf team established a new school record by shooting a 291 in the tournaments first round on May 5. Beside McNeil and Robinson, members of the championship team are Tony Terry, Charles Anderson, Gregory Outlaw and Charles Sledge. The team is coached by Dr. Ralph Burns of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department. The final results of the team’s standing and the top five individual medalist are... Broncettes Win CIAA Crown By Marion The Broncettes started play in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Tournament with three wins Friday May 6, but faced a must-win-situation on Saturday after losing 5 - 6 to the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams in the first game of championship play. Debbie Parks, a four year veteran with the Broncoettes, his a three-run home run in the sixth inning of the championship game to give the defending CIAA champion an 11 - 6 win over the Lady Rams. The Broncoettes broke a 3 - 3 game with an eight run offensive burst in the sixth. Sharon Johnson lead off the inning with a single and scored after three base hits. Debbie Parks followed with her game winning homer. Lady Broncos Win CIAA Southern Division Jet Names Broncettes Championship **Indicates Conference Games Crowe to the team captains, Nellie King and Debbie Parks. They are my coaches and leaders on the field.” In winning the championship for the second consecutive year, the Broncoettes became the first team ever to win the tournament championship after being seeded number one. Two Broncoettes, Sharon Jones and Sharon Johnson, graduates of Terry Sanford Senior High School and Westover Senior High School, were selected to the all tournament team. The Broncoettes posted a 4 -1 record in the two-day tournament. They won three games Friday defeating Virginia State 14-2, Saint Paul’s College 10-5 and Winston Salem 7-2. Winifred Williams was the winning pitcher in all three games. Leading batter for the Broncoettes in the championship game were Sharon Jones, Sharon Johnson and Grace Frye, who all went 2 for 3 at the plate. Billiard Championship Results By Marion Crowe The Winner of the Alpha Phi Omega and Rudolph Jones Student Center Billiards Championship held April 15 was Earl Bryant. The Runner-up to the campus best billiards player was Levorn Coe. Bryant advanced to the champion ship match by beating Robert Small in the semi-final while Coe bested Jimmy Brunson. The tournament was conducted in conjunction with Alpha Phi Omega By Marion Crowe Concetha Smith and Sheryl Drayton made, JET Magazine (April 25, page 48) for their basketball prowess. Both Broncoettes were listed as Black College Basketball Champions. Smith, a 5’ 8” senior from Norfold, Virginia, was listed as the CIAA’s (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s) leading scorer with a 27.2 points per game average and Drayton, a 5’ 7” senior from Charleston, South Carolina, was the conference leading rebounder with an average of 11.7 per game. FSU Athletes Honored By Marion Crowe Concetha Smith was named Bronco Athlete of the Year at Fayetteville State University 1982 - 83 All Sports Banquet April 23. The annual affair was held in the H. L. Cook Dining Hall. Guest speaker was Mr. James Paige and Dr. James Carson, Assistant to the Chancellor, was the Master of Ceremonies. Also receiving awards were Kevin Martin, football; William Person, men’s basketball; Gary Robinson was selected as the top golfer; Nellie King was voted the top softball player of the year and Robert Dancy was selected the best track athlete. Broncos Golfers Win Tournament By Marion Crowe Lonnie McNeil, a member of the Broncos golf team and individual medalist winner of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Golf Tournament, won the Fayetteville Metropolitan Golf Association’s 7th Annual Scholastic Golf Classic May 16 held at Fort Bragg’s Stryker Golf Course. McNeil, the defending champion shot an even- par 72 in the first round of the tournament. Gary Robinson, also a member of the Broncos CIAA championship golf team, won the Fairley Clarke Kiwanis Club-Golf Tournament May 16 at the Gates Four Golf and Country Club. Robinson, the Cumberland County champion, won the tournament by four strokes. By Marion Crowe Patricia Nichols was 5 for 5 with a home run, a triple and five RBI’s as the Lady Broncos routed North Carolina Central’s Lady Eagles 21 - 9 to capture the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Southern Division Softball Championship April 26. The win for the Lady Broncos assured an automatic berth in the CIAA Championship in Hampton, Virginia on May 5. “The team was loose,” said Coach George Williams. “We finally got the hitting that plagued us all season together and with our defense played a tremendous game.” Leading the Lady Broncos at the plate were Nellie King, 3 for 4 with a SAC and two RBI’s; Sharon Jones, 4 for 5 with a triple, a double, and four RBI’s; Sharon Johnson, 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBI’s. In the second game, the Lady Broncos scored eleven runs in the fourth inning and managed to hold off the Lady Eagles for a 17 - 16 win. Nellie King, 3 for 5 with two triples, a home run and two RBI’s and Sharon Jones, 4 for 4 with two doubles and a RBI were the Lady Broncos leading batters. Basketball Players Sign By Marion Crowe Fayetteville State University’s Athletic Department announced May 13 that they have received commitments from three Cape Fear Region athletes to play basketball next season for the Broncos. The three players are Anthony McLaughlin of Red Springs, Otis Brooks of Bladenboroand Darrick Sheffield of Kinston. McLaughlin, 6’ 6”, averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game this past season with his high school. Brooks, 6’ 2”, averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Sheffield, a 5’ 10” guard, averaged ten points and seven assists per game. Coach Mary “Honey” Lamb also stated she has commitments from three athletes which include Sabrina Barnes of Hoke County High, Janica Johnson of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Alma Atkinson of Greenville.
