A Dr. Algeania Freeman Driver: First Woman SGA President Reprint The Voice Vol. 39 No. 4 April 16, 1985 By Michael Gaddy Louise Driver was elected Student Government president and Dianna Cooper was named Miss Fayetteville State University (FSU) in the recent student election held March 26- 27. The election marked the first time students elected a woman as Student Government president at the 118-year-old institution. Driver, a junior from Bertie County, North Carolina, and a biology/chemistry major, defeated Teresa Lennon and Martin Rainer for the top student-elected post. Driver succeeds Mr. Curtis Jefferson as president. Cooper, a junior from Naismith, South Carolina, and a math major defeated Kimberly Jeffries, Ruth King, and Patrena Sawyer for her title as Miss FSU. Eugene Johnson, a junior The Perfect Senior This year's senior class was extraordinary. Although, everyone is different we chose an example of a perfect senior, -Deatrice Synita Patterson. Many of us know her as “Kool- Aid.” Deatrice is an all-around good student. She is involved in many activities, organizations, and clubs. Some of the activities she has been involved in are: 1981-82: Inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Soroity, Inc. 1982-83: Pan Hallanic Council Vice-President 1st Historian-Charter member Society for the Advancement of Management. Judiciary Freeman 1985 Commencement Speaker Dr. Algeania Freeman will serve as the 1985 Commence ment speaker for Fayetteville State University. A 1970 graduate. Dr. Freeman is the first graduate of the institution to serve in this capacity. Dr. Freeman is the Chairperson of the Depart ment of Community Health and Rehabilitation at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. Her credentials include being honored as a regional and national finalist for the 1984 White House Fellows Program. Governor Charles S. Robb appointed Dr. Freeman to serve as term on the Virginia Board of Examiners for Audiology and Speech Pathology. The governor also named her to the state's Task Force on Science and Technology. As a part of her professional activities, Dr. Freeman served as the Executive Director of the National Black Association for Speech - Language - Hearing, and she currently is serving as a board member for the National Association of Allied Health. She received the Ph.D. degree in 1977 from The Ohio State University at Columbus in Speech and Hearing Science. She earned the Master's degree in Speech Pathology and Audilogy at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and the baccalaureate degree in English and Speech at Fayetteville State University. Dr. Freeman is the wife of Ernest Freeman who is the Director of City Planning for the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, and she is the mother of one son, Ernest Freeman 111 (Trey). 1985-86 SGA Officials: Standing left to rigiit - Michelle Ballard, Miss Student Ceter; Dianna Cooper, Miss Fayetteville State University; Louise Driver, SGA President; Eugene Johnson, SGA Vice- President; and Kevin Evans, SGA Business Manager. Pep Club, Hood Hall Vice-President. 1984-85: Hood Hall President - Senior Class President - Collegiate Fellows - .Voice Staff - Pan-Hallenic Council Secretary - Most Ambitions Award for Hood Hall - Outstanding Service Award-Cooperative Educa tion - Served on the Advisory Committee to the Vice- Chancellor of Student Development - Residential Assistant - Tour Guide for the Youth Motivation Task Force. The work that Deatrice does speaks loudly for her. She is indeed the Perfect Senior. from Fayetteville, North Carolina, was elected vice- president of the Student Government Association (SGA). Michelle Ballard, a junior from Leland, North Carolina, an office administration major, was elected Miss Rudolph Jones Student Center. Kevin Evans, a junior from Smithfield, Virginia, and a business administration major, 'was elected business manager of the SGA.
