FSU Comeback Bid Falls Short
October 19, 1985 at 1:30
p.m. Fayetteville State
hosted Winston-Salem
State University (WSSU)
for their homecoming
opponent. At the start of
the game, Winston-Salem
won the coin toss and
elected to receive the ball.
On WSSU’s first drive of
the game, they were halted
by a fired up Bronco
defense, which went
without the services of nose
guard Otis Ransaw who
was side lined because of a
knee injury. The Bronco’s
offense came on to the field
and moved the ball
impressively, but was
unable to come up with a
first down and had to punt
it away. Winston-Salem
State took over and found
that it was hard moving the
ball up the field, and they
had to punt it back to FSU
at 6:35. In the first quarter,
FSU began passing the
ball and getting receptions
from Moses Ford and
Benjamin Knox. WSSU
big defensive play came
when Raymond Puryear
intercepted a Jerome

Morgan pass. Winston-
Salem was unable to score
six points, so they settled
for a Tyrone Smith field
goal. Fayetteville’s next
charge with the ball was
again halted and they had
to putn it to Winston-
Salem. The Rams did not
control the ball for long
when Ram Quarterback
Bobby Junior was inter
cepted by Bronco Senior,
defensive back Martin
Ricks with 1:39 left on the
clock before the half.
At the start of the second
half of the game, FSU’s
Gary Moore ran for some
big gains and picked up
some key first downs. On
the first down for the
Bronco’s, Bruce Dunlap for
the Rams picked off a
Jerome Morgan pass and
set the Rams up for their
first 6 points when Edward
Byers bowed his way into
the end Z9ne. Tyrone
Smith’s extra point was no
good. So the score was
FSU-0 and WSSU-9. The
Bronco’s next drive was
stopped when Bruce
Dunlap picked off Mor
gan’s pass. Once again, the
Rams first possession with
the ball was destroyed
when they fumbled and
Phillip Julius for the
Bronco’s recovered.
Fayetteville started with
the ball at the Rams 7-yard
line when Jerome Morgan
was sacked in the end zone
for a safety. On a few plays
later, WSSU scored again
when Bobby Junior
launched a pass to Masha
Paul for another 6 points.
The field goal attempt by
Smith was no good.
The Bronco’s first
touchdown came on screen
play to Gary Moore. The
extra point attempt by Ted
Squire was good. The
Bronco’s last touchdown
came on a pass to
Benjamin Knox from
Jerome Morgan and FSU’s
two point coversion was
foiled, causing the score to
end with FSU-13 and
WSSU-17. Phillip Cofield
was chosen MVP for the
Bronco’s 1985 Home
coming.
