The band is composed of six adopted brothers and sisters of the George family, ranging from ages 9-17. Having organized in July ’81, The Steel B andits h ave spre ad their unique blend of c alypso-popul ar-cl assic al music from national conventions at major hotels to famed amuse ments parks like Six FI ags. An aspect that sets the Steel B andits ap art from most b ands which perform on Steel Drum instru ments, is their incor poration of other instru ments like the flute and clarinet and the use of voc als. The b and w as first organized as a way of giving the George kids a productive w ay of re- leasing “adolescent energy”. However, since th at time the profession al attitude among the band members has grown. It has become important for them to be able to sh are the be auty of music so close to their cultural heritage. The Bandits pi ay authentic Steel Drum instruments, finely cr afted and made especially for them by the world famous Ellie M annette. A trinid ay native. Mar Mannette is widely known and re spected for contributions to the evolution of the Steel Drums. The Steel Bandits: Travis (16) Band Leader, Michelle (16) Vocalist, Rodney (17) Brass drum, vocalist, V al arie (14) Cellos, Terry (10) percu- sionist, Lamarra (9) Spider web steel drum. Hot Spots In Fayetteville Fayetteville is not one of Americas most talked about cities. However, it is an All- American City. We took a survey on our campus to see where our students like to go and party and this w as our response: The Smoke Bomb is the pi ace to go. Re ason being is because of the GI’s from Fort Bragg. They have a v ariety of clubs and men to choose from. To me that’s where I like to party! Cynthi a “Smurf’ Gilli ans I consider Fort Bragg a hot spot bee ause there are so m any men there and you never h ave to worry about finding a man because they are always at your service! F.J. The hot spots in Fayetteville is Fort Bragg. Because it has a great impact on almost everything in F ayetteville. Richard McCuller Smoke Bomb By Shari Johnson If you are in F ayette ville, the pi ace to be is the “Smoke Bomb” according to the m ajority of students at Fayetteville State University. Since the “Smoke Bomb” h as such a great impact on our students this reporter decided to visit the “hot spot”. “What, a line?” The night was alre ady horrible. Standing in sub zero temperatures to get into Fayetteville/Fort Br agg’s most sought night club, I noticed there was re ally no dress code. I s aw blue jeans, silk dresses, leather mini-skirts and three-pieced suits, just to name a few. Ah, finally I reached the ticket table. I generously g ave the m an two doll ars which in turn, he stamped my hand with red ink and gave me a ticket. Now, I could proceed to the ticket checker. Here, he takes my two doll ar ticket and te ars it in half. Hurray, I’m inside. “Hey baby,” “Yo m a-m a,” and “Wh at’s up? Are some of the greetings I received when I entered. You slowly move along, like a herd of c attle, to find a table. The crowd was overwhelming. Every square inch of the place was occupied. Finally someone got up to d ance so I kindly “borrowed” there seat. It worked nicely because as soon as they got off the dance floor, I was asked to dance. People jumping, running, and dancing all over the floor m ade the atmosphere exciting, yet somewhat d angerous. D ance after d ance, new greetings, and reunions with old friends made the night most enjoyable. But like in the story of Cinderell a, the night had to end. This reporter concludes th at the “Smoke Bomb” is an alright pi ace to be. However, it’s somewh at of a mad-house but we all need a little excitement every now and then.
