REBUILDING YEAR EXPECTED FOR MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM With a new interim coach and ten new faces on the court, Fayetteville State's Men's Basketball team is facing a season that stands to be, at best, a year of growth and experience-gaining. Ray McDougal, the interim coach of the Broncos, took over the job in June after last year’s coach, Jeff Jones, left to take the head coaching job at Delaware State University. A member of the teaching faculty at Fayetteville State, Coach McDougal spent ten years as head coach of the Bronco football team and with a 50-45-3 record is the school's only winning football coach ever. According to players. Coach McDougal stresses the importance of being a good per son and scholar first and an ath lete second. Assistant coaches will be Bobby Henderson and Michael Lunsford. Five players return from last year's 8-17 team. Those players are Darrell Harris, Tyrone Boger, Odis Bellinger, Rodney Davis, and Artice Council. Darrell Hams is last year's leading scorer who averaged 17.3 points a game and will be looked to for leadership by the rest of the team. Harris is described by the coach as a good leader and perimeter shooter. Tyrone Boger was selected to last year’s CIAA All-Freshman team but has not practiced with the team during preseason due to an injury but is expected back soon. A fine all-around player, Co- Captain Rodney Davis is a 6-4 junior who averaged 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds a game last year and is expected to be one of the key starting big men. Rodney led all scorers in the team’s preseason inter-squad scrimmage Blue- White game on November 10 in the Lilly Gym with 29 points. Top prospect in the middle is junior Odis Bellinger, a 6-5, 190- enrolled at FSO. ufif^-stafe stu dents are also eligible, a special feature of the Institute's internship program. Also expected to start are Darrell Armstrong, a 5-11 freshman guard, and 5-11 Philip Hart of Fayetteville. The Broncos were picked to finish sixth out of seven teams in the CIAA Southern Division by the Coaches Association, although Coach McDougal was less optimistic and placed the Broncos seventh on his ballot. Part of his reasoning was no doubt the fact that the Broncos will be the smallest team in the league. "I hope and feel that we will finish higher than sixth, our team goal being to finish in at least fourth place in our division," says Coach McDougal. All the fans hope so, too, and wish the new coach and his players well in the 1988-89 season. (Contributing to this article were James Allen and Odis Bellinger.)
