i I FSU Beaten In Opener RICHMOND, Va.—Robert Timmons kicked a 22-yard field goal with 3:43 remaining Satur day night to steal Virginia Union’s 23-12 Central Intercol legiate Athletic Association football wil against Fayetteville State, spoiling the return of Broncos’ head coach Ray Mc- Dougal. McDougal began his second tenure as FSU head coach after compiling a 50-45-3 record from 1970-79. He’s the winningest coach in school history and the only one with a career record above .500. Fayetteville State, trailing 20- 12, drove to the Virginia Union nine with 8 1/2 minutes remain ing. But Glenn McFadden’s fumble was recovered by Vir ginia Union. The Panthers drove to the FSH three before the Broncos’ defense—led by two- time All-CIAA linebacker Andre Bowden, who was nursing a sprained right knee—stiffened, forcing the field goal. Virginia Union used a 21-yard run by William Flythe and a 35- yard pass play from Carl Wright to Kurt Green to take 13-0 first quarter lead. FSU cut it to 13-6 at half on a Willie Woodard to Anthony Bar nes 34-yard pass play. Woodard was playing for injured starter Paul Stevens, who had a hamstr ing pull. Stevens, expected to be the quarterback, played in the second half and helped the Bron cos to a touchdown. The score was set up by a Marvin Price in terception, one of two he had in the game. The touchdown came when Kenneth Frazier scored from the two with 5:26 left in the third quarter to pull FSU within 20-12. Virginia Union had taken a 20-6 lead when Wright passed to Junior Wigfall for a 15-yard score earlier in the third quarter. a itj - • * ita* i
