1989 FSU Volleyball Team
BY ANTHONY MCCOLLUM
and ERIC LEWIS
The scene is deadly serious and
the determined young women at the
practice floor were working hard in
practice. An equally stem and
determined coach at the side lines
shouted instructions and encouraged
the team. Volleyball Coach, Dr.
Peggy Green, talked about the vol
leyball’s team confidence in com
petitions at this year’s CllA.
The Lady Broncos finished fourth
in the conference last year and some
returning players like Shiela
Seward, Beverly Hicks, and Rose
Woods will help lead the team to a
successful year. Team leader, Shiela
Seward made the All CIIA Vol
leyball team and All Tournament
Team Volleyball for 1988-89 season,
will also be active.
Coach Green says, “the Fayet
teville Slate University Women’s
Volleyball team is determined to be
successful in the 1989 season.” The
one thing the team has to overcome
though is the menial lapse they have
right now. The difference between
this year’s team and last year’s team
is this year’s team is very quick.
The expectations for the Lady
Broncos Volleyball team for the
1989 season is very high and a good
team spirit will be the key to tlie
success. Fans, of the Lady Broncos,
“let’s support them by showing up at
the games and cheering them on!”

Athletes Need to
Up Their GPA's
NASHVILLE, TENN.—College
athletes will be required to earn bel
ter grades if they want to complete,
the National Collegiate Athletic As
sociation decided at its annual
January meeting.
The new rule, sponsored by the
policy-making NCAA Council, sets,
for the first time, uniform oversell
gradc-point standards for eligibility.
Effective Aug. 1, 1989, athletes will
need a 1.6 cumulative grade-point
on a 4.0 scale after their first season
of competition. After the second
season, student-athletes must have
1.8, and a 2.0 after their third and
subsequent seasons.
