Career Planning Center Seeks Student Involvement
by Kelvin Culbreth
One of the most helpful
offices on the FSU campus is
also one of the least known; the
Career Planning and Placement
Center. In order to help
publicize the Center, as well as
get students involved with the
Center’s many valuable services,
the Broncos’ Voice introduces
the "Career Comer." The
"Career Corner" will appear in
every issue, offering the latest
events and undertakings by the
Career Planning and Placement
Center.
The Director of the Center,
Jim Scurry, said the students can
benefit greatly from using the
Center’s resources. "Our main
purpose," Scurry said, "is to
assist enrolled students and
graduates in their preparation for
securing career-status
employment or attending
graduate school after finishing at
FSU."
"This is accomplished
through career exploration
seminars and workshops on
subjects such as job-search
strategy, resume writing,
dressing for success, and
interviewing skills."
Some of the Center’s most
beneficial activities are the job
fairs, at which recruiters are
available for basic interviews
and question-answer sessions
regarding employment
opportunities with their
companies, and in their fields in
general.
"Just a few of the
companies that regularly visit
FSU are Northern Telecom, the
Bureau of Labor Statistics,
Glaxo, Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney’s,
Blue Cross/Blue Shield
Insurance Company, and the
Federal Bureau of Investigation,"
Scurry said. "So you can see we
have an array of companies in
corporate America, as well as
government agencies, that are
interested in graduates of
Fayetteville State University."
An additional service
offered by the Center is co
operative education. "Students
participating in co-op," explained
Scurry, "are selected and placed
in work situations that
correspond with their academic
majors. This work takes place
with major institutions,
corporations, and agencies
around the country. Students in
the co-op program will usually
secure career-status employment
with whom they had co-op
experience. For example,
students who co-op with federal
agencies are assured career-status
employment within 120 days of
graduation."
The Center also maintains a
career library with corporate-
related material and
undergraduate and graduate
catalogs from schools around the
country.
According to Scurry, the
students play a crucial role in
maintaining the success of the
Center.
"The biggest problem we
have is the lack of student
involvement and participation in
the scheduling of interviews and
job placement activities. All
FSU students are encouraged to
establish a relationship with the
Placement Center, but seniors
are asked to establish a
placement data file as soon as
possible. This file will enable us
to assist you in your efforts to
become gainfully employed after
graduation, and it is a
requirement for interviewing
with visiting recruiters."
The Career Planning and
Placement Center is located in
suite 230 of the Business and
Economics Building and is open
Monday through Friday from
SAM to 5PM. All services are
free of charge.
Director Scurry can be
reached at 486-1205. In addition
to Scurry, the Center’s staff
consists of Barbara Ragland
Jones, Assistant Director/Co-op
Coordinator (486-1221), and
Cynthia Colbert, Coordinator of
Job Location and Development
(486-1206).
Look for the "Career
Corner" in every edition of the
Broncos’ Voice.
