September, 1991 The Broncos' Voice Page 15 Sports What's Goin' On With The Broncos' WHAT’S GOING ON? The 1991 Bronco Football season will be one to be remembered. There are many expectations that have been placed up-on the shoulders of this year’s young team. Expecting a better season than last year ranks high in the minds of the coaching staff. The 1991 coaching staff consist of: RAY McDOUGAL, Head Coach, MELVIN LINDSAY, ROOSEVELT HOLMES, FRANK MERCHANT, MONROE BERK and "new comers" PAT SIMMON and GREG RAY. Along with the new faces, new uniforms were purchased for the football team by the FSU alumni in an attempt to turn over a new leaf for the "BRONCO POSSE." Coach McDougal did not just offer glamour to the team, he also sat a few goals that he wanted the team to reach: "Win the opener, have a winning season, gain a playoff berth, and just a chance to play in a CIAA- championship game." Whjle setting these goals, McDougal understands that it really takes patience to make them work. "It takes time to rebuild when you’ve got a whole lot of new good players.... we need one more week of practice before the first game." Coach McDougal commented. However, there will two returning seniors who will contribute leadership for the Broncos and they will have their hands full. Co-Captain Darrin Taylor, a 6-foot-4, 265 pound left tackle, should give the posse leadership and experience on the front offensive line. Guy Williams, a Seventy- First High School graduate, takes control at quarterback. Last season Williams completed 11 of 22 passes for 209 yards. McDougal feels confident about his leader-ship. 1 Kenneth Frazier, standing at 5’-6" and weighing 200 pounds, will start at fullback, along with Gerald Puckett, a 6’- 1", 187 pounder, starting at running back. Together they will add experience to the back field. The receivers will be lead by Westover High graduate Keba Baldwin, a 6’-2", 210 pound sophomore. Foster Wilkins, the other co-captain, will add experience, hard hitting, and high motivation to the defensive line-up. Derrick Williams, a sophomore, started two games last season and will return at linebacker. Although there will be a pair of freshmen and a sophomore to start in the secondary, McDougal has confidence that they will get the job done. Karl Mona, a Westover High graduate, will replace Darrell Armstrong as kicker and freshman Sterlin McClain will handle the punting duties. The schedule for the 1991 season will really be a test for the Broncos. They will be taking on some very fierce teams. The 1991 schedule reads: AUG. 31- CARSON-NEWMAN - 7:00 H SEPT. 7- HOWARD UNIV. - 1:00 A SEPT. 14- ECSU - 7:00 H SEPT. 21- ELON - 7:00 A SEPT. 28- OPEN OCT. 05- WSSU - 7:00 H OCT. 12- NCCU - 7:00 A OCT. 14-VSU -1:30 A OCT. 26-JCSU - 1:30 H* NOV. 02- NORFOLK ST. - 7:00 H NOV. 09- LIVINGSTONE - 1:30 A *> DENOTES HOMECOMING The first game was played before an estimated home crowd of 3,000 as the Broncos fell to Carson-Newman by a score of 44-21.
