Welcome to the first issue of the 1991-1992 Broncos’ Voice. This issue, the first in the
magazine format, took a great deal of time, effort and prodding, but it is finally together and ere
for your education and enjoyment. , . ■ r ■
The cover, illustrated by our in-house artist Stephen Charles, is the culmination or ideas
generated near the end of last semester. This cover is particularly appropriate now due to George
Bush’s neglect on domestic issues. • , u ^
Our tax dollars are used to fund numerous activities and social causes. It is always hoped
that these monies will be used for the benefit of the masses and not the trifling enjoyments of
the few who make policy in this country. Although the few who make policy are supposedly the
representatives of the masses, it is becoming increasingly difficult to pinpoint exactly how
Americans are benefitting from their own tax dollars.
The issues illustrated - the recession, the state of education, homelessness, AIDS, crime,
prison overcrowding, the rising cost of health care and the war - are but a few of the pressing
issues in America today. • . r. • i- if
It was George Bush’s decision to expend tax dollars to fight a war in the Persian uuli.
Yet, if one were to speak with the average Joe/Jane on the street, it is the other issues illustrated
that are increasingly important to them.
In this issue, we cover 4 of the issues illustrated. Kimberly Smith, a staff writer, takes
a look at the recession. Barbara Beebe, the editor of Broncos’ Voic^ interviews Fred Sapp
about AIDS and the college community. Instead of tackling the health care problem in the
country, we have provided you with a senate-proposed solution to the problem. Lastly, Manning
Marable contributes his thoughts about the war in the Gulf.
In our next issue, we will tackle the connection between drugs, crime and prison
overcrowding; we’ll take a look at homelessness, education, the tax dollar and many other issues.
We’re looking forward to a productive year. Get ready for the ride.
