CAREER CORNER
Continuing in the same vein,
Akbar stressed that black people should
celebrate themselves. He said it’s great
if blacks put up poster of Malcolm X,
W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, and
others. However, blacks should celebrate
cultural events as well, such as
Kwanzaa, an afrocentric alternative to
Christmas. Akbar said that as long as
black children think that a Santa Claus
of another race will bring them a "choo-
choo train", then they will develop a
slave mentality to celebrate the power
structure of another race of people.
Dr. Akbar concluded his
presentation by acknowledging love
between a man, woman, and family.
Responding to questions from the
audience, Akbar addressed concerns
about the success of blacks in
economics by citing the historical
examples of Elijah Muhammad and
Madame C.J. Walker.
Dr. Na’im Akbar is a research
assistant in Clinical Psychologist at
Florida State University. He’s a
graduate of the University of Michigan
and a member of the National
Association of Black Psychologists.
He’s been commended for his lectures
in colleges and settings all over the
world. His views have been expressed in
his appearances on "The Phil Donahue
Show", "The Oprah Winfrey Show",
"The Geraldo Show", and "Tony
Brown’s Journal".
