CAMPUS NEWS the bands before he can. It is Wednesday, October 16, and the Senate Meeting is obviously not a typical one. Chancellor Hackley and the university’s attorney, Ms. Webb, are both present. Dr. Sexton, the advisor of the Senate, commences the meeting agenda by giving the floor to Dr. Harry Ghee, Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs. He reads the following statement into the record (see box p.3); Dr. Ghee was willing to answer questions after reading this statement. After Dr. Ghee presented his prepared statement (this same statement was presented to the Voice), Wallace Haywood took the floor. His statement, completely different from the written statement issued to the Voice on October 18, was the following: "Good evening everyone. 1 am the president of SGA, Wallace Haywood. We had a meeting Friday with Dr. Ghee. No, we had a meeting Thursday with Dr. Ghee. I worked hand in hand on this concert with other members of my executive staff - Dexter McRae, Anthony Ratliff, Mark Baldwin. We worked hard on this concert; in the event of this concert, you had said to bring a representative of this company .Xavier Black, in here so you can meet them. And, I checked the credentials of Xavier Black - they told me they were doing other shows -1 called behind this ’cause I trust no one, you know - I don’t even trust you Dr. Ghee. Anyway, I’ve done everything possible to make sure that everything is legit for this show because I remember a few years ago they lost all this - blah, blah, blah. I wanted to make where Fayetteville State - all we did was buy tickets, regardless of who we bought tickets from. It’s casual that - it’s always that you pay a promoter’s fee. These same people charge a promoter’s fee to A&T that the show will be - which can be verified with the executive officers - next Saturday Jlnd they’re supposed to do a show that next week in Winston- Salem College. But anyway, sir, after that meeting. Dr. Ghee, of the representative from Xavier Black, it was to my understanding and also Dexter McRae, Program Director of SGA also, that they were going to do our homecoming. Like I said, once again, I checked all the promoters. I called the agents in New York and California to make sure this was no hype, because Guy has never been to Fayetteville. Anyway, the representative left this and I left this thinking that hey, boom, we’re gonna have a homecoming concert. The company said hey they’d pay for the advertisement - Advertising as Fayetteville Slate’s homecoming. I had gave (sic) them a verbal yes because I was straight with you guys - yeah nice show, hey they’re on the top of the charts. Boom. That’s good. That’s my job capacity. We had brought contracts back and forth to our lawyer, Ms. Kay Webb, to see if they got approved. You know 1 followed the chain of command like 1 supposed to (sic). Okay, Dr. Ghee said that, to my understanding and maybe to a few other people that were in that meeting, that almost as a verbal agreement that this contract is good til 1 check any other imparticulars (sic) - almost verbatim from what you said. O.K., Friday, 1 came back - like last Friday, a couple of days before our spring break - Dr. Ghee hadn’t signed the contract, and I’m like man, all the students are like ’you’re our representative. What’s wrong? Why are we waiting this long to get the deal?’ If we’re gonna get the contract, we had a certain date to fill. And to my opinion, you know - and I thought to a few other people that were in that meeting - that Dr. Ghee was making excuses not to sign the contract. So, anyway, I called the meeting, asked them could I come, I brought some students the first time at about 1 o’clock. Dr. Ghee had a prior engagement. Anyway, we met at 3:30. We had a meeting at 3:30, me, Patrick McCall, another young lady. So, Dr. Ghee ran down the particulars of the contract and he said ’by the way, there’s a message that sounded familiar to me on the....on the answering machine as far as this company. So, I said ’yeah’, but you didn’t elaborate. He didn’t elaborate until later. So, then he said ’Haywood, are you Xavier Black or do you know them?’ I said ’No sir, if I was Xavier Black -if 1 had $70,000 to bring to Fayetteville State or bring down Guy - I would. That would be beautiful, because we wouldn’t have to worry about Fayetteville State as far as having a good homecoming. But then, Dr.~Ghee showed me some paperwork from the phone company, saying hey well this number, 678-6778 to that effect, is listed to a Mr. Wallace Haywood for Voice Mail. I was totally shocked. I sat down and said ’man, all the hard work that I’ve done as far as SGA is filled with innuendo that, well, man I’m a low- budget criminal or insinuating that maybe I might be a low budget criminal. So, I took it and 1 said oh well, no problem. That’s a good excuse not to have a concert. Then, Dr. Ghee showed me some other particulars. Why should we pay a promoter’s fee, different things. So, anyway, what I did, I sucked it up, I was shocked. So, I went home and did my homework. That Monday I went to the phone company, raised hell, I said hey this is not my number. How the hell did it get on my phone or hsted for me. The lady said with voice mail, anyone can par se have a number and not know it - cause it’s not on your bill. Anyway, I got a letter that they’re gonna send me in the mail from the telephone company for anyone that says well this is your number, so I can say ’hey this is not my number.’ This is verified by the phone company. Hey I can take you up on slander or sue you for whatever whatever. Then also Dr. Ghee, I did more homework. 1 know a few people like you say when yor checked my number. I just wanna ask you a question, you know, since everyone is sitting here. What is your phone number for example. What’s you phone number? [Here. Dr. Ghee gives his home phone nwnber and Hollywood repeats it. Hollywood commences to show 3 people in the room - this reporter, Ms. Kay Webb, and Dr. Ghee a number on a piece of paper that does not correspond to the number Dr. Ghee has said is his own.] O.K. Dr. Ghee, 1 wish you to look at this also. I got connections down at the phone company, too. I did some checking, you know. They have that number listed to you as Voice Mail at the phone company. Even though you don’t know it. 1 want you to keep it so you can check it. I’m a fighter, sir. People look at me automatically and say he must be a hood, or a criminal, whatever. I’m a hardworking student that’s worked hard; we’ve put many hours in at SGA to have good events for the students. All I’m saying is this, sir. For example, our budget. I raised hell with you about our budget. This year you gave us 520,000, we raised a little heck, you gave us S5000 extra. And you told us, hey, we got a certain amount of money for each student, I undcrsumd. I understand that. $90 a student, v.’e’ve got 3700 students. But 1 said, ’whoa where’s my cut?’ But then I thought about iL That’s for the first semester. And then we have a second semester, which hopefully students come back, but I know sometimes we have a depletion of students. But the point I’m making, sir, is that - Sr example - you said raise money. Show me how you can raise money so maybe we can give you some more money for your budget. Like for example, we had a predawn dance scheduled November 2. You canceled it. This other event that we have that we had canceled. So I scratched my head, then I said ’well do I.raise heck and do I stand up for the students as far as having a good budget so we can do things or do 1 put rny back against the wall and maybe get blackballed or have people that don’t like me’ or whatever. Cause, I mean, I wanna be proud of my institution, as far as the school that I’m going to. And I put many hours in here, in fact I’m not even doing as well in my classes as I should. But the point I’m making, sir, is that this concert - and Guy has never been to Fayetteville - I’ve checked on this group. I’ve checked on these people. And hke I said, I got this letter coming from the phone company which I want you to see. I’ve nothing to hide. Sir, if I was Xavier Black and I had $70,000 to bring Guy down here. I’m a rich college student - I would love to do that, but I’m not that and I don’t have it that way. This show’s still.gonna go on. We gave these people almost a verbal agreement They said - the guy told us from the company that we took the liberties to advertise as Fayetteville State’s Homecoming. I mean as I can recall and still the contract was not signed and other people even at the meeting said well Dr. Ghee’s making excuses not to sign this contract. And I said ’yeah I understand that’, because you gotta cover your job. But that’s standard procedure. Dr. Ghee, as far as for promoter’s fee and for company...1 hope all students buy tickets. Today sir, the show is going on. They gonna have the show anyway, but it all looks stupid cause the students cannot go down to the coliseum and pay $16 or $17 for a ticket. The day of the show - and the show will go on - and Dr. Ghee said well maybe I was careful, but it’s better to be careful than sorry. But, man, now our students - you know this is advertised and all the students talk about it - Homecoming. They cannot afford a $17 ticket or $16 - $17 at the door - to go to homecoming show because, man, I didn’t buy tickets because I tried to be a real stickler and try to find every excuse not to approve this concert. I told you from the get go, sir, I didn’t care - we could afford to buy tickets straight from the coliseum. They guarantee us our money back - straight from the coliseum . As far as our budget, we’re working with a shoestring budget. This is one of the best concert deals which can be verified that Fayetteville State’s ever had. But, sir. I’ve worked hard, but the point I’m making is that as to those allegations. So when I gel that paperwork from the phone company which -they’re gonna give it to me - cause I raised hell. So that’ll show for the phone number. It was just a mistake. In fact, I basically can almost tell you how it happened. But anyway, sir I just don’t want to - I think we’re gonna look stupid. It comes time for the concert - it’s time to go through and students have no tickets. Thank you. I’ll answer any questions. Hollywood’s statement at the Senate Meeting is a rambling, long evasion of the issues. Answers to specific allegations are not given, leaving many who attended the meeting with a sense of uneasiness. He seems unprepared and nervous, avoiding eye contact with anyone. Mark Baldwin, Business Manager for the SGA, iterates, "I’m really surprised at some of the things that are going on. It doesn’t look too good." Tracey Jackson, a voting member of the Senate and a dorm representative, asks Hollywood to respond to the allegations that he has access to the post office box designated as the address for Xavier Black Enterprises. "It was a mix up. I don’t know how it happened...! didn’t know anything about any mail. I can’t go on heresay until I go down to the post office to get paperwork to see if I am down there listed, but for right now I have no knowing of any post office box or voice box." Jackson, prodding a bit more, continues, "Well, do you have
