STUDENT LEADERS PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE by Zacques D. Gray The Fourth Annual Student Leadership Retreat was held September 19-20, 1993 at Camp Rockfish in Hope Mills. Each year the Student Government Association sponsors the retreat to develop and strengthen leadership skills. Student Government Association officers, senate members, and other student leaders attended the two-day retreat. Participants were expected to share with their constituents the information and resources they obtained at the retreat. Dr. Harry Ghee, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, presided over the opening session. He discussed the purpose and objectives for the retreat and outlined the agenda. Chancellor Lloyd V. H a c k 1 e y stressed the need for students to assume their responsibilities as vital members of the university, community, state, and nation. Other key administrators , including Dr. Harold Wade, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Mr. Benson Otovo, Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance, also shared information to enhance leadership abilities. Additionally, the retreat included presentation on "Leadership in Group Situations" led by Dr. Harmon Watson; "Parliamentary Procedures" conducted by Mr. Eric Moore; and a working SGA planning session facilitated by SGA officers. Assistance was given by Dr. Glenna Sexton, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and SGA Advisor; and Mrs. Olivia Chavis, Associate Vice for Student Activities and Counseling. Shawna M c C a d e n SGA Vice-President, stressed the important role the Senate plays in ensuring plans for activities and programs are carried through. SGA Program Director, Zacques Gray, led the planning session for Homecoming events and solicited ideas for future programs and activities. One of the highlights of the retreat was the Challenge Course, participants were challenged to complete team-building exercises. SGA President, Trudy Fields, expressed the importance of the Challenge Course toward teaching students how to work together to accomplish a goal. The 1993 Student Leadership Retreat afforded student leaders the unique opportunity to bond as a group, set goals, and plan activities and programs for the remainder of the 1993-94 academic year.
