The Department of Student Life Services and You by Iris Hunt-Smith, Director of Student Life The Department of Student Life, in conjunction with the Fayetteville State University Security Task Force, has been hard at work to ensure more secure measures for residential students. Due to the hard work put forth by this committee, as well as by the members of Student Life, the residence halls now boast several changes that provide a safer and more secure atmosphere for the students. The three most important changes that directly affect each student are peep holes in all room doors, telephones in each room, and exterior door keys for the female residents. The Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance worked hard with Carolina Telephone and AT&T to line up the telephone service that the students are now enjoying. The telephone security measure assures each student that they can reach help if they are in their rooms and a potentially dangerous situation presents itself. Students must remember, however, that locks and peep holes are only as good as the people behind them. If you neglect to look out of the peep hole, it becomes virtually useless. Additionally, the exterior door locks will also be rendered useless if you prop open the doors or allow non-residents to follow you inside. Please take the time to utilize the safety measures that we have provided! Look around - I hope you have noticed the areas that have been lit up! Starting in the summer through the first weeks of school, new lights were installed in an effort to make the campus brighter and safer. As an additional security measure, large crowds will not be permitted to congregate in parking lots or near the residence halls. Fayetteville State University Campus Police and the Student Life staff have found that large crowds at night have become a problem for the campus. Because we cannot always control the crowds, it has come to our attention that the best way to handle the crowd is by dispersing it. Understand that the Campus Police department is not placing a curfew on you; to the contrary. Campus Police will be helping you and your friends stay safe by not allowing unruly factions to disrupt our peaceful campus. If anything of a suspicious nature is observed, call the department. The department is interested in starting a student security service as well. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (S6A) SHORTS By Roger Harris Attention FSU student body: your Student Government Association (SGA) has been very active! Here's a brief synopsis of what they've accomplished thus far; * Established use of parliamentary procedure in all meetings to facilitate organizational techniques, structure, continuity, and professionalism. * Established committees (see Campus Organizations) to ensure that areas of concern are handled in a specific, organized, and direct manner. * Established itinerary for FSU Homecoming (see Calendar). * Approved request for non-FSU student guests at coronation. * Developed student survey whose results will be used to help determine the SGA's agenda. * Developed SGA Checks and balance system to maintain and ensure procedural integrity. * Allotted $250 to each class for fund raisers (issuance will be based on review and approval of proposals to be submitted by each class to the SGA) . * Approved $250 allotment to send select Communications major students to Howard University Communications
