FSU Men "Rip" Bowie State in Home Opener
by Roger A. Harris
For those of you who couldn’t
make the home opener, you missed
a stellar performance by FSU’s out
standing basketball teams Decem
ber 13,1993. Since by the time you
read this article we’ll already be in
the new year. I’ve decided to forego
the stats and try to give you an
aesthetic view of what really hap
pened that evening.
Three factors made this game
very important: (1) FSU led the
CIAA with a 6-3 record going into
the game; (2) Bowie State had the
CIAA’s leading scorer in Brian
Brooks, who was ripping the con
ference for 35 points an outing; and
(3) it was my son’s birthday.
During warmups, Bowie State
looked ominous by comparison as
they outsized and outweighed FSU.
It didn’t help that this was my first
time seeing FSU perform. The game
up to half time was very competi
tive, with both teams showing
flashes of brilliance. The most in
triguing aspect of the game was the
mental chess match being played by
Bowie State’s Brooks and FSU’s very
own Carl Chaston. Chaston’s game
is ice cold nasty, with intelligence
being his approach and controlling
feature. With a handle stronger
than Samsonite luggage and wheels
faster than Amtrak, he could have
teams more competitive— the mark
of true leaders.
Even with that, FSU’s rotation
had me wondering what was really
going on; just when they’d get on
track, a substitution would be made

more of FSU’s family and friends
were in attendance and chilling,
enjoying the game, and awaiting the
second half.
The second half beast that was
unleashed on Bowie State was ac
tually the method to the first halfs
madness ... its name: DEFENSE.
Plain and simple, FSU extended
INSIDE ...
taken Bowie State for a ride any
time he wanted, but he didn’t. In
stead, he chose to insure that his
teammates got involved in the game,
giving them the ball when and where
they needed it to be the most effec
tive. On the other hand, Brooks
was raining down NBA tre’s and
slicing through FSU’s “D” like a loaf
of warm bread. They both could
have played on a more personal level
but stayed within the framework of
their respective roles, making their
that broke the team’s flow. Coach
Tucker later told me that this was
in an attempt to find the perfect
mix. Even at 6-3, they are still
trying to decide who works best to
gether (just imagine how good they’ll
be once they get over that hump!)
At half time Cheer-phi’s beauti
ful Kisha Divine briefed me on the
women’s team’s victory (sorry I
missed the game!) and gave a shout
out with much love to all people to
have a happy and safe new year.
