The Broncos’ Voice February 1994 News From the SGA College Or Kindergarten? by Trisha Burke, S.G.A. Senator Homecoming is be hind us, but the inci dent which occurred during the Pre-Dawn Dance hovers over F.S.U. like a repug nant stench that can't be identified. During that dance held at the Gilmore Youth Cen ter, the males' bath room was destroyed by a group of males who apparently per ceived some benefit from vandalizing the stalls. F.S.U.'s Student Government Associa tion, which had al ready spent approxi mately $750 on the dance, was suddenly responsible for $1950 in damages to the youth center. The SGA's advisor. Dr. Glenna Sexton and several of SGA's officers took time out of their busy schedules to view the destruction to the bathrooms. For no apparent reason, the culprits somehow put enough force on the wall of one of the stalls to damage ev ery single stall. At first, you might want to believe that this kind of behavior could have only been displayed by some non-FSU students. But that idea Is futile since everyone was required to show an ID upon entrance to the dance. Because the dance was held at an off-campus facil ity, faculty from F.S.U. were not re quired to chaperon the event. Does this incident mean that F.S.U. students need a babysitter every time they have a so cial function? No. It only means that a few people have been spoiling things for the rest of us. There have been rumors of damages at Big Brother is not watching you other dances. Who ever did this damage has gotten away with It so far. Surely these aren't educated people we're dealing with. And anyone who has any informa tion about the van dals should realize this fact and offer, at the veiy least, anony mous information to the campus police. The Student Gov ernment Association is especially con cerned about this in cident because of the amount of money it had to fork over to the youth center for the damages. What many students need to realize is that the $1950 is not "SGA's" money; it's F.S.U. students' money. The money that you pay to go to these events goes to ward having other events. We also strive to improve with eveiy event we sponsor, and epi sodes such as this one only hamper our ef forts (and our bud- gets) to serve you, the students. And if the vandalism contin ues, SGA may have a lot less work to do if the administration decides to step in and curb student activi ties. F.S.U. students are supposed to look out for one another but not to protect such inane acts of vandal ism which cost all of us. Notwithstanding the expense of $1950 to the SGA, the much greater cost is to our pride as F.S.U. students. You know what you are doing better than any one... If you think that what your club, fraternity, soror ity, fellowship or group is doing is of general in terest - or if you just have ah opinion or idea that you would like to share with our reading public - Art, Science, News or Sports - write it up, send it off.
