The Broncos’ Voice March 1994 Great Expectations c^oger A, Harris Because of the mandate of finals, this printing likely represents our last issue for this semester. With that in mind, I’d like to take this time to preview what you can ex pect next year from the Broncos’ Voice (BV). The most Important fac tor that concerns any manager Is structure and continuity. These are both historic problems for this pub lication as the staff is totally vol untary. We plan to petition Student Affairs to establish financial com pensation for editorial positions and use this Incentive as a draw ing card to attract new and contin ued staff support. Luckily, the nucleus of our staff Is committed to returning next year, but we will still be actively seeking new staff writers (no experience necessary!). It’s a very real concern of mine that the BV be reflective of the entire FSU family. However, because of a lack of student and faculty submis sions, a majority of our copy is pro duced by the BV staff...it’s not sup posed to be like that! To facilitate a broader and more reflective voice, we will solicit contributions from community sources (high schools, businesses, etc). We have already began talking to various departments in an effort to Incor porate and centralize the editing and distribution of their newslet ters. Procedure is In line with our desire to eventually mall the BV to commuter students (student fees may already cover this expense). To cut production costs, we are working with the campus print shop and Mr Otovo’s office eventu ally to have the BV printed on cam pus. This process will not only cut production costs, but will also al low us to produce a more timely publication (every two weeks ver sus our current sporadic publica tion schedule). Purchase orders have been submitted to acquire the equipment necessary to handle or current production and anticipated growth. We hope to Increase both our copies per issue (currently 2,500) and external distribution as a whole (separate from our com muter student mallouts). It Is our belief that as a microcosm of Fayetteville proper. It Is our obliga tion to extend our voice to as broad an audience as possible; increased external distribution satisfies that requirement. We are trying to find a new loca tion. The Student Center Is a beau tiful location, and Mr Williams and his staff have provided outstand ing support, but Its ten o’clock shutdown time seriously inhibits our ability to meet deadlines, not to mention that our current status and future growth dictate a very real need for more space. We are hoping to get connected to the Lo cal Area Network as well as Asso ciated Press lines so that we can give you national and international coverage. This arrangement will also allow departments and outside sources worldwide to forward sub missions via E-Mail directly to our office (isn’t technology great!). However, the most Important factor in this entire process is your con tinued support and participation. A simple comparison of our first and last issues provides a sterling ex ample of the potential for positive growth possible when students make quality and excellence their priority. In closing, we are honored to be a part of the process that will ensure the future viability of the Broncos’ Voice, a truthful and rep resentative voice of the FSU fam ily. WHY SAC, WHY NOW? q^ger A- It has been noted that this year’s SGA has been one of the most organized and productive in recent memory. That being said, it has also been noted that student life issues (from co ed visitation to commuter student concerns) have not been aggressively pur sued. To their credit, the SGA also noted this per ception. An analysis of this dilemma revealed that the program committee's extensive agenda domi nated SGA meetings to the point that other student life issues of equal import could only be approached on a surface level. It was concluded that a re-struc turing of the SGA would most effectively serve the needs of the SGA and the student body. After de tailed study, it was decided to remove the program di rector and business man ager from the SGA and cre ate a lateral student gov ernment body, the Student Activities Council (SAC). SAC will concentrate solely on sponsoring events and activities for the educational and social development and enter tainment of FSU, freeing the SGA to concentrate on student life issues. The FSU student body showed foresight and vi sion in approving the cre ation of SAC, allowing the SGA (and by extension, SAC) to position them selves to represent more ef fectively and specifically represent student concerns both today and in the com ing century. A special thanks to Dr Glenna Sex ton, SGA Advisor, for plant ing the seed whose fruition was the SAC. Also a very special thanks to the SGA members who contributed their time, patience, and in sight into the development of SAC. Generations will benefit from the wisdom of your decision. m Jackie is eight years old. Unless her leukemia is ar rested, she may never be nine. Her only hope is a treat ment that's been successful in cases like hers: a bone marrow transplant. But to have a transplant, Jackie needs to find a donor. Someone whose bone marrow matches hers exactly And for someone who's black, that^ the hard part. You see, the best chance of finding an exact match for Jackie would be someone else who% black. But there simply aren't enough black donors yet To help Jackie, and others like hei^ the National Marrow Donor Program is putting together a list of volunteers. People willing to give of themselves, so someone else can have the chance to live. Leam more about becom ing a bone marrow donor. Call your local blood center; or the National Marrow Donor Program, at WOO-654-124? You might be just the donor Jackie^ waiting for. When you can save a life, yotfre the lucky one.
