BRONCOS' FOOTBALL PROSPECTS
By Marian Crow
he Fayetteville State University
Broncos, under the guidance of
third year head coach Jerome
Harper, look forward to the
upcoming season with great
enthusiasm. The Broncos will
open the 1994 season at home
against Livingstone College
September 3 at 7:00 pm. Coach
i’Harper and his staff welcome
back a squad that finished the
1993 season with a 6-5 record
overall, 4-4 in conference. The
'team lost eight veterans which
included five starters on offense
and three on defense.
The team will be led by all CIAA
, running back Clifton Davis,
j Davis had a stellar season last
year, setting school and CIAA
I records for rushing attempts (311)
and rushing touchdowns (17). He
also set school records for most
rushing yards in a season (1591),
career rushing yards (2648),
career rushing touchdowns (21),
and most 200 yard games (4).
Quarterback Robert Harrington
enters his final season as top gun
for the Broncos after an
impressive year in which he
threw for 1411 yards and 11
touchdowns. Harrington is
currently the Broncos’ all-time
passer with 3856 yards. The
receiving corps will see plenty of
action. Returning are Sedric
Utley and Marcus Davis who
combined last season for 781
yards on 51 catches for six
touchdowns.
Once again the Broncos’ special
teams will be formidable with the
return of Second Team All-CIAA
punt returner Darnell Cox and
kickoff returner Jessie Curtis.
Last year Darnell returned 30
punts for 417 yards and one
touchdown. Curtis had 22 kickoff
returns for 650 yards and two
touchdowns, his longest 85 yards.
On defense, the key players
returning are defensive backs
Daniel Muldrow and Marc
Macklin, who should both be
contenders for All-CIAA honors.
Last year Muldrow had 89 tackles
(32 unassisted).
Gone is the offensive front that
complemented the Broncos’
rushing attack. Coach Harper’s
main goal through the off-season
has been finding replacements for
the four lost linemen, all starters.
“Having lost four linemen, the
offensive line has been our
primary area of recruiting,”
Harper said “Anytime you lose
the players we did up front, that
has to be our main concern.”
