O ftroncos’Voice 6ept.ember 1994 Editorial Comment IF I WERE CHANCELLOR.^. By Roger Harris We've all said at one time or another in our lives "If it were me, I'd...," or "If I were in charge I'd...." Well, hundreds of conversa tions with fellow stu dents have given me the insight to dare the un thinkable, for if I were chance1lor... If I were chancellor the first thing I'd do is re-hire Dr. Harold Wade, former Vice-Chan- cellor for Academics. For those of you that didn't know him, under stand now that he was not only a man of un common moral integrity, but also a true vision ary who cared about stu dents; he was a role model. After that. I'd centralize the coordi nation of class sched ules to ensure the logi cal offering of pre-req uisites and co-requi- sites as well as elimi nate the scheduling of required courses at the same time on the same day. Many of the sched uling problems students now face would be elimi nated by this review (ask the students!) . I would direct that we of fer Tuesday/Thursday af ternoon classes, while offering labratory classes during that time to enhance scheduling options. I'd offer a weekend college (non-tradi- tional students would love this ! ) so that you could still work a forty-hour week and com fortably earn a degree. I'd also offer a more comphrehensive, afford able daycare program as well as include living facilities for single parents into the current dormitory renovation plans. I would reallocate a portion of student fees to pay for the up-keep and upgrading of FSU's computer labs. It makes no sense that we are trying to access the in formation highway in what amounts to a Desoto (286 computers). Worse, Title Three (federal funds, gang) cut fund ing for upgrades to our computer labs from its budget. In effect, they closed the station be fore we had a chance to gas up and access the information highway. I would restructure the administration to eliminate the cumber some, layered, and bu reaucratic flow of in formation (Total Qual ity Management at its best ! ) . I have yet to understand what purpose paying an associate vice chancellor serves when you already pay the vice chancellor for doing his job. We have too many associate vice chancel lors. All they seem to do is expend a very nice state salary. You'd think this was the White House or something! Speaking of pay. I'd make sure that all com petent (by publicly known and measurable standards) professors got paid at least on a level with administra tors. Can you believe that some administrators with masters degrees get paid more than teaching professors with doctrates (let's elimi nate market rate pay scales). For students I'd have monthly community forums See Chancellor Page 10 The Broncos’ VOICE Faculty Advisor Dr. Linda Barlow Staff Jeff Anderson Kelli Cardenas Ogbonna Coates Tasheba Dukes Lishan Harrison Jaime Cruz-Morales Amey Pickett Lesli Sample Steve Sellers AI Scruggs William Shelton Beth Willet Copy Editors Layout Editor Athina Williams Jackie Walker Christopher Johnson Office Managers Benetta Kingsberry Scheryl Davis-Johnson Business/Advertising Brad Wright Managing Editor Dennis Allman Editor Roger Harris The Broncos’ Voice do Fayetteville State University 1200 Murchison Road Fayetteville, NC 28301 (910) 486-1357 fax (910) 486-1857 email- wright@fsu.fsufay.edu Disclaimer Opinions expressed in The Broncos’ Voice are those of the individual writers and do not necessarily represent the views of Fayetteville State University, its employees, the University of North Carolina, the Voice staff and editors, or our advertisers.
