Burgess From Page I sire, a need, and a will to uncover a hidden truth; to unearth the legacy of a ordinary, noble, and great women buried in the smokey ashes of t ime . The Journey .There was nowhere to begin. No anthology, no books, no guidance; only vague and seldom mentioned references that shed dawn's light on her subject of women who served during the Civil War. This chal lenge was the daunting obstacle that loomed over Burgess. She had sued and won the right to participate in liv ing history reenactment of Civil War battles after having been re moved from, then thrown out of, a national park that was hosting the event. Their reason for her dismissal: they didn't want to present that aspect of history. After putting out no tices of inquiry, she was eventually con tacted by the Wakemans, a very proud and tra ditional family, who had almost embar- rassedly saved a col lection of letters from a somewhat "odd" mem- ber of their family broncos'Voioe Aeplember 1994 23 (they thought it strange that a woman would disguise herself as a man to join the army) . After what seemed like an impos sible trial by fire, Lauren Cook Burgess fi nally got the break she was looking for. . .or had a spirit from the distant past found its conduit to truth? For two years Burgess dove into her research, expending every bit on spare time and change she could muster to un ravel the foggy mystery that was Sara Rosetta Wakeman's life; hidden PART-TIME AND FULL-TIME TELEMARKETING POSITIONS $6.OO/HOUR+BONUSES Males and females with strong voice needed immediately. The hours, days, and years of research had an almost spiritual effect on Burgess, for through her efforts, she came to "know" Sara; to understand, experience, and real ize the pride, honor, loneliness, fear, and pain that Sara shared through her letters. Burgess' journey, arduous yet poignant, reached its climax when she visited Sara Rosetta Wakeman's grave site. She had to do it alone, in the quiet warmth of a Louisiana sun; a gentle wind whisper ing a silent prayer to a sister-in-arms now gone,...much like the quiet tear that fell softly from her cheek. Look at their pic tures closely; Lauren Cook Burgess and Sara Rosetta Wakeman. What you'll see is two women who have made their mark by forcing their combined and united wills beyond the barriers of time, prejudice, and classism. We, the FSU family, stand with the historians, institutes of learning, and oth ers of merit who have and will continue to applaud your historicly triumphant effort to champion Truth. Look again at Sara's picture. Is it me, or is Sara smiling? Scholar From Page / 9 The Public Education Outreach Office also plans to meet individu ally with each scholar at le.ast three times during the academic year to monitor academic progress. The office also encourages scholars to take advantage of the Mentoring Program, the Counseling Center, and the Career Planning and Placement Office for further support dur ing the academic year. It seems that the Chancellor's Scholarship Program is continually improving every year for the benefit of its stu dent scholars . As long as this program continues to be focused on the needs of its scholars one can deduce that, as students acquire more motivational skills, retention rate of scholarships from year to year will continue to in crease. Is this a suc cessful program? Even if only one student made full use of the Chancellor's Scholarship Program it would, in my eyes, remain a success.
