MUSIC NEIA/S from Uzi-D
MUSIC NEWS from Uzi-D
By Jeff Anderson
Welcome back, fellow
Broncos, to a new se
mester; one that brings
new faces, new activi
ties, and new music.
Let me start by saying
that my name is Jeff
Anderson, and it is my
pleasure to be here
representing for the
Voice. This is the spot
where you will hear all
of the music and en
tertainment news that
goes on as the world
turns . From the hype
concerts to that phat
CD you've been hearing
about, this is where it
all happens. Anyway,
enough of the small
talk, let's take you
back to the end of Fall
semester '94. I've got
two words for ya :
Freaknik '94. This was
the biggest and wild
est black college
spring break ever! At
least 2 50,000 black
college students
bogarded Atlanta, GA
April 21 thru 24 to get
their freak on, among
other things. If you
weren't there, you
missed a great weekend
of entertainment and
just plain out fun. A
few of the big names
there included, Snoop-
Doggy Dogg, Luke from
2 Live Crew, and Wu-
Tang Clan. Overall,
everything was pretty
stable, thanks to the
security that did show
up after all of that
strike drama passed.
This summer
Fayettevile had its
share of concerts as
well. A Fort Bragg's
Summer Sunsplash
(hosted by Foxi 99.1)
the queen of dancehall,
Patra, was butterflying
brothers into a frenzy
while Sudden Change
came on strong. The
turnout was great.The
concert was held on
Fort Bragg which
brought a large turn
out . There were others
that performed on that
ticket but were not im
pressive enough to men
tion. Layla Hathoway
and Maze held a con
cert at the J.C. fair
grounds around mid-
July. Despite the look
of rain, the show did
go on and let me tell
you, that woman can
sing. The "Stop the
Violence" tour gave a
visit to the Cumberland
County Arena early Au
gust. Wu Tang, OutKast,
Super Cat, and AG put
on a show . Aside from
OutKast (whom I never
saw in concert before),
this show did not im
press me much either.
The new Club Images had
their grand opening
this summer and has
already turned out some
great acts. Lorenzo,
Black Girl, and the
nasty man himself,
Aaron Hall have per
formed at the club, and
all were slammin' .
Speaking of slammin',
this is something I
never thought would
happen. Janet (Ms.
Jackson if you're
nasty) actually came to
Walnut Creek July 30.
This is an outdoor
arena in Raleigh and
yes it did rain but
we're talkin' 'bout
Janet. Sean Beamon of
Fayetteville said that
the concert was all
that and then some .
Janet didn't just come,
sing two songs, and
leave, she gave a com
plete show even with
the rain. Personally,
I'm sorry that I missed
this show, but I know
I'll be ready for any
other show she is giv
ing close by (I'll be
there like a Deadhead) .
Despite all the criti
cism about how no one
ever comes here in con
cert, this summer's
turn out was fairly
good. Before I
jet, let me give you
the local rundown on
who's hot. I got a
chance to check out Da
Brats' "Funkdafied" CD
and came to one con
gee Uzi-D Page 19
