Quote of the year: “This is not my job!”
I was born twenty years ago to an
eighteen-year-old unwed mother. For
eighteen of my own years, I had two of
the strongest parental figures a person
could ever know; my mother and my
maternal grandmother. It turned out that
after eighteen years my parents were able
to recapture the love they had once
known for one another. They were mar
ried, and I was introduced to another
strong. Black influence in my life. To
day 1 have three very precious people to
thank for their roles in shaping who I am.
“And you ask, just who it is, 1 think I
am. First, I am Black. And second (only
to being Black), I am woman, and I have
no need to roar.”
Yes, I’m pro-black. There is just one problem with that characteristic,
though. People tend to confuse being “pro-anything with anti-some-
thing-else.” When I say I’m ‘‘pro-black,’ 1 m merely proclaiming that
I’m proud and unashamed of who I am.
Yes, I believe in sexual equality and the rights of women. Men of
quality respect women’s equality. I’m not a feminist, though. Come on
people, we live in a paternalistically structured society and even femi
nists are questioning what it means to be a feminist these days. Besides,
this same society has tried to take enough from Black men without B ac
women trying to take from them the role of provider, household head
and father. No, I’m definitely not a feminist. I’m just confident in the ac
that if my man decides to get up and walk out one day, rny wor , my
identity, my willpower, my independence won t go out t e oor wi
him.
Yes, I’m a poet. I have been since the day 1 could coherently convey
my thoughts and dreams on paper. It is only now, thoug , at age wei ,
that I am becoming totally aware of my gift and beginning to use it
maximum potential. m f:ii ,,r. mii.

Natasha Etienne; if you don’t know her, you’re missing out on one of
the true gems here at Fayetteville State University. Hailing from Haiti,
Etienne is a freshman and an honors student. Don t mistake her stunning
beauty for weakness; Etienne served in the United States Army for a num
ber of years. She works for the Broncos’ Voice as a staff writer, blending
her creative writing style and unique viewpoints to enhance the level of
quality of this publica

Fayetteville State University
1994 Football Season in Review
The 1994 football season was
one of high expectations. The Bron
cos boasted one of the most talented
teams in university history but also
one of the youngest. Starting as
many as eight freshmen and juniors,
the Broncos experienced many
growing pains on their way to a 4-5
overall record and 4-4 in conference
action. Despite the record, it was a
season of learning and one which
saw several stars emerge. Three
players w'ere named to the CIAA
All-Conference Team. Elvis
Dudley, a junior defensive lineman
from Hinesville, GA was named to
the first team along with senior of
fensive guard Steven Graham, a
Delco, NC native. Graham’s selec
tion made him a three time selectee,
a first for a FSU player. Clifton
Davis, senior running back from
Florence, SC was named to the sec
ond team. This was Davis’s second
selection.
Several season and career
records were set by Broncos during
the 1994 season. Junior receiver,
Sedric Utley set a school record for
710 reception yards. Clifton Davis
rushed for 1068 yards and finished
his career with 3709 yards and 29
touchdowns. Senior linebacker,
Daniel Muldrow established a ca
reer record for most tackles with
250.
Other players recognized by the
conference during the season were
Harlan Crenshaw and Michelle Jo
seph. Both were named Players of
the Week. Coach Jerome Harper
was twice named Coach of the
Week. In addition, Clifton Davis,
quarterback Robert Harrington, de
fensive back Dedrick Davis, Steven
Graham, tight end Marcus Davis
and linebacker John Cratic were
selected to participate in the 1st
Annual National All-Stars College
Footballl Classic to be held in Lou
isville, KY.

From Page I
Not content to be a “lame duck” interim chancellor, Dr. Benson will do
the things necessary to keep FSU moving forward and upward. In a re
cent conversation, she related “...I was very impressed with the internal
structure present at the university when I arrived. In particular, the com
munity outreach programs. You are doing here and now what is only just
being thought of in other communities. I want to continue that success.”
Dr. Benson is a highly qualified, very articulate, open, and charis
matic person who doesn’t take long to get to know or like. She is a pow
erful force: at once a role model, a leader, a winner. So, next time you see
her around campus, be sure to say hello. Who knows,...you may well be
greeting our next chancellor!
