Music News From Uzi-D
Once again it’s on. Broncos. Wel
come back from a hot summer vaca
tion. The big events this summer were
all the summer fests going on. If you
didn’t get a chance to check out the
African-American Music Festival in
Charlotte, then you missed a big one.
At only $8 a ticket, 23 performers
appeared at Memorial Stadium to rep
resent R&B, Rap, Reggae, and old
school flava. The lineup included
names like D’Angelo, Faith, MC
Hammer, Smooth, S.O.S. Band, Roger
Troutman and Zapp, Mad Lion, and
Jody Watley just to name a hand-full.
No disrespect to the new school, but
the old school “wrizecked,, shop.
Roger & Zapp had the crowd at a mu
sical high kicking the old school hits
“Computer Love,, and “More Bounce
to the Ounce,,. The S.O.S. band re
minded us that “baby we can do this if
we just take our time,,. Evelyn “Cham
pagne,, King told us it’s a low down
dirty “Shame!,, Over all, despite the
heat (it felt like Satan’s sauna), it was
a decent event for Charlotte’s first
Summer Fest of this size.
Boyz 11 Men also held a concert at
Walnut Creek amphitheater. The show
was nice. Montell Jordan, who opened
for the group, had a great stage show
but his vocals were nothing to brag
about. Overall, the summer was filled
with concert tours, but you would have
had to have been in the hot spots to
really catch all the flavor.
Enough about the past. Let’s see
what’s coming to record stores near
you. If you are looking for some R&B
CD’s with mad flava, be sure to check
out Faith. One of my favorites on the
CD is “Soon as I Get Home,, (#8).
Most people might argue that Faith
sounds like Mary J, but Faith’s voice
is more mellow and seasoned whereas
Mary’s voice is more raspy. Anyway,
both of them are talented and deserve
respect due.
Others to check out are Michael
Speaks, Monica, Tony Thompson, and
don’t sleep on the new ones from Af
ter 7 and John B. For some dance hall
flava, be sure to check out Shaggy,
who topped the charts with
“Boombastic,,, and Patra.
On the hip-hop tip, for some West
coast flava, check out the new one from
Bushwick Bill. Musically the tracks
are tight. The lyrics are decent as well.
It seems Bill’s style has improved. A
new artist off of the Rap-A-Lot record
label. Poppa Lq, is also representing
the West with authority. The produc
tion is tight on all the tracks, which
makes way for that South Central flow.
On the East coast be sure to check
out the CD from Milkbone. All I can
say about this one is butter tracks, lyri
cal flow, and madd flave. Grand
Puba’s new one is butter as well. Most
of the tracks have the same consistent
flow, but the CD is still worth picking
up. “The Show,, sound track is pretty
decent with new songs from Mary J.
Blige, LL Cool J, Redman/
Methodman, and the phat reggae joint
by Kali Ranks. “Jazzmatazz II„ has
some jazz and hip-hop flavor mixed
in on the current single “Watch What
You’re Saying,,.

Sounds For All Ears
One Fayetteville’s best kept secrets
exists in the U.S. Flea Mall on
McPherson Church Road. It’s called
the Musik Hut. A small independently
owned record store, the Musik Hut
offers not only the newest releases on
CDs and cassettes, but also has
Fayetteville’s largest selection of
records!
Established in 1991, the store has
constantly changed to meet the needs
of its customers. It has expanded to
1100 square feet of new and used items
in almost every style of music, includ
ing rap, punk, jazz, gospel, and alter
native.
For the vinyl lover, the store has a
selection of over 5,000 records. This
includes over 1,000 12" singles and
over 700 jazz albums. These records
