For more information, call 864-9490. BOOK REVIEWS by Jacqueline Haire Criminal Seduction by Darian North Love, murder, and incredible twists await the readers who fancy a riveting page-tumer. Again, I was unable to put yet another book down before go ing into slumber land at night. In the beginning, I was thinking this was just another predictable murder paperback, but I found the book far more compel ling than any murder mystery I’d ever read. The main character, Owen Byrne, is an aspiring writer who sets out from Kansas to New York City to write a true-crime book about a lady who is accused of murdering her hus band, a famous painter. Like me. I’m sure every reader will guess that this country boy, who had never seen an African-American before, would fall in love with the defendant, Lenore Serian. However, it is not an easy love affair, and not one that happens quickly. Over the course of his love affair and the trial, many mysteries unfold, and the reader is carried into one incredible dimension of the mur dered man’s life. In fact, don’t be sur prised at how many times you find yourself thinking that it was safe to say that you had figured it all out, when everything takes another turn in the road. Criminal Seduction is a definite must-read for those interested in a murder thriller with just a touch of love and a lot of sexual interludes. Many of the facets of this book will disgust you, make you angry, and make you happy that you finished that one terri fying chapter. Then there are others that will make you smile and long for a sequel. The secrets unfolded in this book will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to tum the pages faster and faster until you’re at the end, but don’t cheat, because you might miss a lot of mind-boggling and juicy details. Criminal Seduction, published by Signet in 1994, can be purchased any- Scplcmbcr 1995 where paperbacks are sold. New, it retails for about $6.00, but can easily be found at a second hand bookstore for less than $2.50. Carnal Innocence by Nora Roberts Nora Roberts outdoes herself with this book. The title is perfect, com bining “carnal,,, lustful or crude bodily pleasures and appetites; and Inno cence, a little town in Mississippi whose inhabitants had only read about such heinous sexual crimes being com mitted in larger cities. All of a sudden it was the women Of Innocence who were afraid to walk the street alone. No woman knew who to trust, but many of them, at least the ones mur dered, knew and trusted the handsome and smooth talking Tucker Longstreet. One of the richest and most sought- after bachelors in town, Longstreet was a t the top of the list of suspects. How ever, Caroline Waverly, a famous con cert violinist, refused to believe that he was a killer; a womanizer, but not a killer. Slowly, Caroline also began to trust Tucker and was drawn into the murders, first by finding a body, and then by befriending the murderer.
