Bronco* Voice September 1995 FSU at a Glance FSU Receives Biotechnology Grant Fayetteville, NC, March 31, 1995 -- The faculty and staff of FSU proudly congratulates Dr. Valeria Fleming and members of the Depart ment of Natural Sciences on the approval of their proposal to the Histori cally Minority Universities Biotechnology Program Initiative. The Ex ecutive Committee of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in Re search Triangle Park, NC will provide $360,000 to FSU for 1995-96. This project represents the second phase of a five-year plan to develop a strong program in biotechnology and to develop infrastructure to make faculty and student research highly competitive at FSU. The current grant is the third project for which Dr. Valeria Fleming has received funding from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. The first, in 1992-93, was $46,306 to establish a basic biotechnology instruc tional laboratory. In 1994-95, $160,000 was awarded to enhance biotech nology literacy in existing FSU courses for biology and chemistry majors and physics minors. Objectives for use of the current grant are; to establish laboratories necessary for a minor in biotechnology, to upgrade the biotechnology labo ratory experiences in existing courses that will be included in the minor, to establish support services for courses in the proposed minor, and to increase library support for biotechnology minor courses. Again, our congratulations and sincere appreciation to Dr. Fleming for her work in actively pursuing and obtaining grants for the FSU Depart ment of Natural Sciences. FSU Professor Earns Certified Fraud Examiner Designation Fayetteville, NC, April 5,1995 —The faculty and staff of FSU congratulate Dr. Jacob O. Balogun, Chair, Area of Accounting, for being named as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. This CFE designation is awarded to select professionals responsible for de tecting, deterring, and investigating fraud. The Association’s mission is to edu cate qualified individuals in the highly comprehensive techniques of fraud de tection, investigation and prevention. Fewer than one person in five has passed the Uniform CFE examination on the first attempt. Dr. Balogun joins the ranks of over 10,000 business and government professionals who have earned the CFE designation. AKA Induction Ms. Kimberly N. Ashton was inducted into the National Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority “Scholar Hall of Fame,, at the 56th Boule held in Indianapolis, IN. Of all applicants, only two were selected for induction. Selection was on the ba sis of those undergraduate sorors who have upheld high standards of academic achievement. Kimberly, a senior En glish Teacher Education major, has a cu mulative GPA of 3.8. Ms. Ashton was recognized in 1994 as an Alpha Kappa Alpha National Leadership Fellow. Along with the other fellows, she spent a week in At lanta, GA, in leadership seminars. A former Miss Fayetteville State Univer sity, Kimberly Ashton is a Bronco in whom we take Pride. Ms. Cook, an Office Administration major, is an honor student and a member of the FSU Chapter of Collegiate Secre taries International. In the community she frequently visits the sick and shut-in with members of her church. She served in the U.S. Army in such capacities as Test Control Manager (Europe), Admin istration Training Supervisor, Personnel Administration Supervisor (Protocol), and Operations and Training Manager. Sylvia Cook is truly a “Bronco on the Move.,, Delta Epsilon Chi Students Compete in Greensboro The Delta Epsilon Chi FSU Student Organization participated in a Market ing State Conference and Competitions on March 2, through March 4, 1995 at the Four Seasons Convention Center in Greensboro, N.C. The following stu dents participated: Maria Boddy Kristie Joyner J. Ronrico Stanley Tezra Parker Maria Boddy recieved a trophy for First Runner-up in the Human Resources Decision Making Contest. J.
