FSU Receives Biotechnology Grant
Fayetteville, NC, March 31, 1995 -- The faculty and staff of FSU
proudly congratulates Dr. Valeria Fleming and members of the Depart
ment of Natural Sciences on the approval of their proposal to the Histori
cally Minority Universities Biotechnology Program Initiative. The Ex
ecutive Committee of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in Re
search Triangle Park, NC will provide $360,000 to FSU for 1995-96. This
project represents the second phase of a five-year plan to develop a strong
program in biotechnology and to develop infrastructure to make faculty
and student research highly competitive at FSU.
The current grant is the third project for which Dr. Valeria Fleming
has received funding from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. The
first, in 1992-93, was $46,306 to establish a basic biotechnology instruc
tional laboratory. In 1994-95, $160,000 was awarded to enhance biotech
nology literacy in existing FSU courses for biology and chemistry majors
and physics minors.
Objectives for use of the current grant are; to establish laboratories
necessary for a minor in biotechnology, to upgrade the biotechnology labo
ratory experiences in existing courses that will be included in the minor,
to establish support services for courses in the proposed minor, and to
increase library support for biotechnology minor courses.
Again, our congratulations and sincere appreciation to Dr. Fleming for
her work in actively pursuing and obtaining grants for the FSU Depart
ment of Natural Sciences.
