broncos’ Voicc Octobcr 199^ Student Comments Jerell Joyner Business Manager (SAC) Lately, many students have asked why there aren’t more activities on cam pus. My response has been to remind them of the blatant disregard and disre spect for not only Fayetteville State University, but also for the students who work so hard and so diligently to bring activities to this campus. On September 9,1995 the Student Activities Council (SAC) threw a FREE party for the students after the Elizabeth City/Fayetteville State football game. The party was to be from 10pm until 2am in the Lilly gymnasium. The party started on time as scheduled and everything was great; but at 12 am everyone simply walked out the door to attend another party that was being held off campus for which there was an admission fee. SAC was left to pay a D.J. $100 per hour for two hours that he didn’t work and five security officers $20 per hour for two hours they didn’t work. That night we paid a grand total of $400 for services that were not used. I understand that it’s fun to be able to attend functions that are held by other organizations, but you must always remember that you are a student first and if you don’t support your school, then your school isn’t going to support you. I’m sure that many students would like to have a Homecoming celebration equal to or better than that of N.C. A&T, but there is only way that this will ever happen: students must support the activities that we have now so the ad ministrators will see that we are enthusiastic about Homecoming and therefore begin to allocate more money for more activities on campus. This year the Student Activities Council has planned some great events for Homecoming week as well as throughout the year. It is my sincere hope that each and every student will come out and support each event to its fullest. Attitude Check... Bronco Pride. I said Attitude Check... Where is your Bronco Pride ? b^^YolandoAAreiem Hey , There is no need for me to sit here and write this article (I don’t get paid to do this). As a matter a fact we don’t even need a newspaper, (nobody picks them up) Come to think of it we should just get rid of Mr. And Ms. FSU (h^shUyanyone'T\ing) Whit!?! Has she gone mad? NO! .-IJust got mad. Each atid eVeiybne of us needs an attitude check. Somewhere along the way we have lost our Bronco Pride! I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but there has been a bug going around ( which is making me sick!). It seems as if the closer it gets to homecoming the more this bug bites people with Bronco Pride. So how long does this bug last? Right up until that last minute, the very last second in the very last homecoming Jammie Jam! For those people who catch this bug, not only do they need a check, but also an Attitude Check. What will it take to get a ‘Bronco Pride’ out of you? If you are one to say “get our football team to win” I’d say “ I have no control over that, but I know that giving the team that fan support it will help keep them in that fighting spirit. If you are one to complain “there is nothing to do on campus” I’d have to ask are you involved with or Philosophy.'ke FSU a better campus enviorment for students? If yc, cause that is’l is boring” I must inquire as to whether you’re a part of a'jafts, You Can Tri here on campus. Also, if you are in a campus organizati ig in it besides PARTY!?! For those who would have ans maior telectha*nWay like you to practice m She will have an opportunity^®" huh) Now go out a „ .'xth vc;.rious workers, manager” feels right now. id company directors.. Well, as for me, I would love to get paid, but I feel like I’m making the difference, so I’ll contuine to write. So Broncos . . . attitude check . . . Tienes Hambre? h^^^lisaJCassoun^ Why is it when 9 o’clock rolls around, FSU on-campus students are experi encing what it really feels like to be hungry? Can it possibly be because the cafe closes at 6 o’clock? Many students feel that the caf’s early shut-down may be one of the biggest reasons why people are so hungry. Another reason may be because there are no on-campus eateries. The hours that Shaw Foods use were established before they were contracted to prepare food for the H. L. Cook Dining Hall. According to Dr. Ghee the students haven’t really vocalized what it is that they want. Students did not show to voice their opinions at food service committee meetings. Therefore, what students want and/or need has not been made known to administrators. Students are also wondering about the mandatory meal plan. At FSU, if you live on campus, you have to pay for the meal plan (whether you eat in the caf or not). Many readers can probably identify at least one person that doesn’t eat in the caf; still, the mandatory meal plan is used for a number of reasons. Shaw Foods needs some type of assurance that a profit will be made (they are a business), so a certain number of students have to be a part of the meal plan. That certain number is all. Another reason why we have a mandatory meal plan policy is to keep the price of each meal down (the total cost averages $6 per day). Another qualm voiced by students is why there aren’t any on-campus eater ies. Well, there is one, the canteen, located in the Student Center which is run by...? That’s right: Shaw Foods and that establishment turns the grill off at five. Dr. Ghee stated that looking at universities across the board, FSU is at the bottom of the list where state allotments are concerned. To get an on-campus restaurant here at FSU, a franchise fee has to paid up front by the school. Dr. Ghee says that money for the fee just isn’t in the budget. The restaurant also needs to prosper in order to stay. It goes without saying that any restaurant that comes on this campus would do swell. The bottom line is the whole problem starts and ends with money. Terry Meritt, Systems Accountant, Business and Finance, stated that “it’s not just the money, but service. We are trying to give students maximum service for their dollar.” Mr. Meritt has the right idea, but it’s a shame when a student actually sits back and reminisces on times when he/she was full. There are a lot of changes that need to be made. If it’s change students want, it has to start with the students. Attend the food service meetings, voice your opinions. Dr. Ghee said that changing caf hours is a reasonable request if it’s what the students want. AT T, of us have to get up, get out there, and start making a difference. WHAT^S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? Courtesy Campus Watch Cornell University: Professor James B. Mass (Psychology) was found guilty of sexual harassment by a Cornell faculty committee. Four women filed com plaints alleging various acts of sexual harassment: “One of them charged that he grabbed her breast, and the others said he had kissed and hugged them and whispered sexual comments. They said he had given them thousands of dollars worth of expensive gifts - including an evening dress, a night gown, a cash- mere sweater, and jewelry.” The faculty committee recommended that Prof. Maas keep his job, but that he be stripped of an award he had received in 1993 for distinguished teaching. Also, the committee recommended that Prof. Maas be fired if he harassed students again. Chancellor’s List by Roger A. Harris We’ve all seen or heard of the outstanding docu-drama “Schindlers List,” a movie about a very humble, yet brave man who devises a list of Jews workers interned by Nazis during WWII, then keeps his promise to save them. Simi larly, the Broncos’ Voice staff conducted an informal survey and compiled a Chancellor’s List: topics of concern to students that they would like Chancel lor McLeod to focus on upon his assumption of command at FSU. Use this list as an informal barometer to determine whether our voice can indeed be heard and whether our condition can be supported (this list can be applied to SGA as well!). 1,. Make African-American Studies a part of FSU’s mandatory core Curricu lum (as it used to be). 2. Play “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at all official functions (as it used to be). 3. Have sincere and open meetings with the student body. 4. Stop the letter we currently send out trying to recruit more white students (it is no longer mandatory or necessary—the deed has been done). ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The Broncos’ Voice sends a sincere and heartfelt thank-you out to Observer-Times Senior journalist Pat Reese. After hearing of our severe budget constraints at a recent FSU Board of Trustees meeting, he donated $ 100 to our cause; the forwarding of truth to a new era. Thank you for helping to ensure that freedom reigns - we love you, Pat. Ed & Staff: -
