broncos’ Voicc -| ^ Homccoming 1995 X 3 From The Desk Of: FSU Senator at Large Dou^^ame^ “Where there’s no vision, the people will perish,,, a quotation from the Bible, is something we all need to realize. As I try to understand this statement, I can’t help but think about how true it is. I look at our people and try to understand what’s going on in our minds, I wonder about our poli tics, and our society as a whole. Then I ask myself, “Why are we considered to be the people with the most prob lems,,, but I can’t find the answers. I do however have'some questions for you: What things are we doing to bet ter our communities; how are we fo cusing on politics, if we are focusing on them at all; and how important is our future to you? I have recently been inducted into The North Carolina Black Student Government Associa tion (NCBSGA), an organization which focuses on the well being of the Historically Black Colleges and Uni versities in the state of North Carolina (HBCU’s), which is led by president Keith Bryant. I had the chance to meet with this organization on October 22, 1995 and I was really moved by see ing the positive attitudes and concerns for our people by the students who par ticipated in this association. This or ganization is one which has the vision to help our young people see what’s going on in politics and throughout our society. Our SGA president, Wayne X (Hodges), carries a heard voice in this organization along with voices of FSU’s 1995-96 delegates; DeLise Hopson, Douglas Barnes, Tonia Johnson, and Linda Barden. These are the people who represent FSU in our vision for the future. These delegates hold a vote on what’s happening to better our people through the NCBSGA. But its not only up to us to represent FSU in the strive to keep or people from perishing, its up to you the African-American males and fe males who want to see true freedom, equality, and justice. We should all join hands and help build a solid foun dation for our people. If you strive for success, why not help out our people along the way. We must realize if we don’t help each other, no one is going to help us. To those people out there who have given up on our people, you must realize Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and every other civil rights leader had a dream. Some died for their dreams, some of their dreams are now fading away. It’s now up to us to become leaders and keep their dreams alive as well as their visions. We also must bring our own dreams and visions into focus, because its time for us to take things into our hands and realize the future will be what we make it. The Dreams, the Visions, and our Future are all things we must strive for so we can keep our people from per ishing. Mr. FSU 95-96, OHandoCevi^ I would like to thank the SAC and all FSU staff for making Homecom ing week successful. Each event was exciting and successful; from the Pa jama Jam (which was a steamy one) to the Homecoming Parade. Congratulations to Latonya McNeill, our Homecoming Queen for 1995. Also congratulations to all the Queens and their escorts for Home coming ’95. I would like to remind everyone about the purpose of the Million Man March. Don’t forget what the march set out to accomplish and let each of us help all positive endeavors come into being. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Orlando Ceville Homecomig ’95 is finally over, but it certainly will be an event remem ber! Thank you to FSU staff and stu dents for making it a success. The Million Man March, a great unification of black men across our country, also proved to be a success. Its goal was to enlighten black men of the need for us to better ourselves as well as all of Black America. We, the students of FSU, showed our support back home with our own unity march. The march was comprised of both men and women and proceeded across our campus ending at the student center, where the events taking place in D.C. wefe being televised. Congratulations to the Homecom ing ‘95 Stepshow Campions: “The Ladies of Distinction,,— Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Sp[ecial thanks to all who attended our Alpha Jam in the new Seabrook Recreation Center. The activity could not have been a success without youl. Keep a look out for future events. Miss FSU Ken^^attoMonis^ Dear Fellow Broncos: Early one morning while sitting in my room, I began to think about the many changes the university has made within the past year: new leadership, new buildings, renovated dorms, etc. Many changes that were made will not only better FSU, but also they will also benefit each individual at FSU if we allow them to. With each new school year, there are new challenges and goals. I often take the time to think about my goals and my many other endeavors. I try to imagine how I am going to achieve my goals spiritually, emotionally, fman- cially, academically, and physically. Many times we are faced with situ ations that make achieving many of our goals seem highly impossible. How ever, we all have the ability to soar above and beyond life’s detrimental situations. In soaring beyond those situations, we are also able to rise above and beyond those people who would perhaps try to prevent us from obtaining many goals. That is life. Dr. Wayne D. Dyer, author in the field of self development, says “Conflict can not survive without your participa tion.,, Yet, we must not be so easily conquered. To achieve some g6als, you may have to inquire after the assistance of another. So often we are afraid to in quire for help for fear that someone will steal what we have worked so hard for. Now is the time when we need to lean on one another instead of defaming one another. We as a society (and as col lege students) are so prompt to judge those we know nothing about, talk about those who have more than we do, or even talk about those who per chance “seem to have it all together.,. How many times have we stopped to think about what these individuals had to go through in order to get to where they are now? Success does not come to those who sit and wait. “You are the result of all the previous pictures you have painted for yourself...and you can al ways paint new ones.,, (Dr. Wayne Dyer) Successful people endure many trials and much persecution in order to ac complish dreams and goals. There are those people who are so happy with themselves, that they find joy in see ing others stumble. Then, alas, there are those who find joy in seeing oth ers succeed beyond the unknown. I like to be classified in the latter category. You should not de-escalate someone to your level, but allow them to raise you up to theirs. Life’s tasks will be a lot simpler that way. So when you are establishing goals that are of the utmost magnitude, stop and help your brother and sister ac complish some of theirs along the way. However, make sure you become aware of those who appear counterfeit. Search your heart and realize people, too, are able to change. Let us not judge those less fortunate, or those more fortunate than we are. Let us not judge those who have made thanges for the better or worse. If We live by this philosophy, our goals will be that much more attainable. Question yourself daily on how you will accomplish your goals. The an swer, I hope, is prayerfully!!! I have learned so much, so quickly about life-' -part from being Miss FSU and part ffom experience. I find that I must climb the ladder of triumph mor6 care fully and harder than the next person, because there is always someone wait ing for me to miss a step and fall. Such is the case for many of us. It is not where you have been, but where you are going that makes the difference. Not until you release your past, will you be able to receive the rewards of the future. It is not easy to do alone, so I suggest you ask for the assistance of one higher than man. I have found that prayer not only brings security, but also it brings happiness and peace. With God on your side (and in your life) there is no goal, no dream, that will seem unfeasible. Stay encour aged! Presidential Report Student Government Association Wa^neJ£^Hod^esJ^ I.
