8 5roncos’ Voicc Homccoming 1995 Jam,yrom page 6 he’s got mad skills in mixing the old school with the latest phat jams. The dance floor was fully packed with those trying to get their “groove,, on. There was a little complaining, but the lights were kept on because of those trying to get their “smoke,, on. My only beef: what happened to the days when people, specifically guys, would ask a female to dance? It’s a little sinister pushing up on a guy, or a girl, you don’t know, but if that’s what it takes to get your “freak on,,— it’s all good. Big ups to the Ice-Cold brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha for a very successful party. Pajama Jam ‘95 by Dora Rogers Monday night’s pajama jam (Oc tober 16) produced a nice little gath ering of FSU students, despite the fact that it was a three day weekend and the participants of the Million Man March were still away or exhausted from their journey. Upon walking into the Lilly Gym, my eyes were fixated on the many dif ferent outfits on display for everyone’s viewing pleasure. There was a combi nation of silk and cotton P.J.’s, as well as towels and bedroom slippers. The atmosphere was right and the poten tial for a good party was there, but I have to make a comment on the D.J.; WACK. Personally, I like to dance and I like to hear good music, but I felt as if the D.J.’s selection of mixes was booty. After the first hour and a half, I really did want to go to bed; I mean, I was already dressed for the occasion. I give much props to my fellow Broncos who attended and made it a violence-free event. I do hope that we have more of such events planned for the future. BRONCO’S STRUT THEIR PJs by Andrea Powers Fayetteville State University stu dents started Homecoming 1995 off correct, first with a rally to offer sup port for the Million Man March, then with a Pajama Jammie Jam to let off a little steam. DJ Chuck T made an in teresting impression on the party goers as he mixed the jams to set the groove. Here are some impressions from FSU’s finest: “The cause was good. SGA is still do ing a good job. I just enjoy seeing ev erybody jump around in their paja mas.,, -Shante‘ Thompson, Fresh. “Kill the DJ. He was fine until he started talking too much.,, -Jennifer Pickett, Fresh. “It was nice. The music could have been better. It was a nice little outing. Next time have a party when all the men are here.,, -Yolanda Barnes, Soph. “Everything is dope. I’m having lots of fiin. I wish the fellows the best, and I hope we win one!,, -,3AM,„ Soph. “For a Pajama Jammie Jam there were a few people overdressed; overdressed for the party and overdressed for bed. But overall I had a good time.,, -Lesli Sample, Junior “I thought the idea was good, but there wasn’t a lot of support from the stu dents.,, -LaShana Mason, Junior “I would like to applaud SAC and SGA for their effort and a job well done. I feel there should have been more stu dent participation because BRONCO PRJDE starts at home.,, -Donetta Bulluck, Senior ALICE WALKER’S POSSESSING the SECRET OF JOY b^^ac^uelinejlau^ This book has been out for a couple of years now, and all I can say if you haven’t read it is, go to the library, the bookstore, or come and borrow mine. It is definitely a must-read; not because it tells a tale of Tashi, a tribal African woman who lives many years of her adult life in North America; but you don’t want what happened to her to happen to you or your daughters. If you know anything about {he cus toms that many of our African female counterparts have to go through, then you’ll understand when I say, “Thank heavens I live in America!,, Curious? Well, a custom of Tashi’s people was for the women to voluntarily submit to the tsunga’s knife and be genitally mutilated (or pharaonically circum cised). I go into shock just thinking about such a practice, so I know that not only did Tashi have a problem dealing with this ritual, but also thou sands upon thousands of young women have. The practice still continues in many areas of Africa. Your stomach will turn when you read the pages tell ing of the forthcoming surgery and of the colorful wording used to describe afterwards, a chicken eating the dis carded clitoris. Alice Walker visually details the ritual and the experience that young Tashi went through. Chapter by chap ter takes you into her world of mental and emotional torture and her desper ate attempts to escape from the bat tling madness that she endured for years. Adam, her husband, and another unlikely ally, finally help her to find a place for the traumatic ritual that was forced upon her at such a young age. Her own experiences force her to do something to prevent other young women from believing in the “reason ing,, behind such a practice. With help, Tashi finally overcomes her fears of life and death. Hardback copies of Possessing the Secret of Jov can be purchased at book stores around Fayetteville for about $17.95. Next edition: Waiting to Exhale, by Terri McMillan. Cafe’ Broncos by Kelvin Thompson Shirley Temple, Nonchalant, Brown Squirrel, or Florida Twist? Whew, isn’t that a mouth full! The Student Activities Council (SAC) sponsored a Karaoke Night in the Rudolph Jones Student Center for the entertainment during Homecom ing. They turned the lobby area of the student center into a rocking little juke joint-Cafe’ Bronco-for a night. Streamers of blue and white adorned the lobby stairs and entrances. Ordi nary multipurpose tables were trans formed into candle lit tables, like the ones found in the very best coffee and jazz shacks of the big city.
