Henderson) MEN'S BASKETBALL-AN INSIDE LCOK Coach Duckett strolled into his office dressed in a blue denim Polo button-front shirt and a pair of khaki Dockers. With swift gracefulness, he hung up his dark tweed sports coat and hat. Just by watching this man, I could tell that he pays close attention to detail. Paying attention to details (especially the small ones) can help in determining the amount of success one can have in any endeavor. The details of his coaching phi losophies were the beginning stages of our conversation. His focal point was that of building a good defensive team. “If your team defense is good and you can get the rebounds to get you into the open court to operate your transition offense, you will create an advantage over your opponent, which enables you to get a high percentage shot without hav ing their defense really having a chance to set up.” The Broncos also plan for success by executing their “freelance pass ing game." In this style of offense, there will be a lot of screens and movements that will be used in order to break down the opponent’s de fense, confusing the opponent as to where the ball is going and where the shooter is on the court. The main reason for running such an offense is the fact that our tallest players stand at 6’7", with the shortest player at 5’11". According to Coach Duckett, “the guys feel that we do way too much running as part of our conditioning. I don’t know why...I’m not tired.” The current roster holds two seniors, Wayne Morris and Donald Petree, five juniors and six freshmen. Here’s something that just might shock you: all of these players are listed as either guards or forwards; there is no man in the middle. It is well within reason that Wayne Morris and Donald Petree will get most of that responsibility. The Unknown A key that will unlock the door to success this year for this “untested team” will be who decides to show up and play. Being the “hunted,” as in being the number one team, is something that they have not really dis cussed. As a team they really do not have a proven point guard or guard, let alone any stars. The real challenge is going to be how to replace the back court. Last year there was an “All-Conference” player in Jerome Oliver and a great point guard in Reggie Gilliume, who was the life blood of the team. “...We’re really an unproven coirimodity. The early part of the season will tell us a lot about ourselves." In a League that is long on competition, hard on the nerves and relent less on those with bad stomachs, welcome to the CIAA. This year's Bronco Team was picked as the preseason team that could win it all. The First Vance - Bryant Invitational All-Star hv Deitric Davis The Capel Arena isn’t the only place on campus to find great basket ball action. The men of Bryant and Vance Hall got together show some campus spirit and to finally find out which Dorm had the right amount of talent to win it all. From the field of four teams, there could only be one winner. The men of Vance 1 proved to be the "Kings of the Court". Although Demeco Archangel led Vance in scoring with 10 points, it was the “clinic” that Aris Young displayed that brought the Trophy to Vance Hall. Aris did it on offense, Aris did it on defense, Aris was everywhere. “It wasn’t show boating; it was just about doing what I had to do for us to win”, said Young. What was more significant than the score was how the entire tournament evolved. Since the departure of J.D. Marshall, the Intramural Sports Director last spring, our intramural sports program has become a slumbering part of the on-campus culture. That all changed when Richard Crosby came around. Crosby, the current Resident Assistant and President of Vance Hall, proposed the idea of having a basketball tournament for the on-campus men to the Community Assistants and Resident Assistants. The whole idea was to resurrect the intramural Sports Program so the students would have something to do when they weren’t studying. Realizing that they had to start small, an internal basketball tourney was held for the men of Vance Hall. With the success of that tourna ment, they followed the same plan and set everything in motion for the for the first Vance-Bryant Tournament. Crosby admitted that this was not an easy feat. Crosby had this to say about the tournament, “there was a lot of running around in making preparations for this event. I’m going to pass these resposibilties on to someone else for the next one. I’ll help in any way I possible can.” Truthfully there should not be a next time, the Intramural Sports Program should be up and running. It’s good to see that the students can take the initiative in order to do things for themselves. Dr. Burns was made well aware of Mr. Marshall’s status concerning his departure, with considerable time to find a replacement. J.D. Marshall went as far as to offer his suggestions on who the new replacement should be. Keep watching for more developments on this situation. Peace!
