Bronco* Voicc A Look Into The CIAA by Deitric Davis CIAA Tournament Winston-Salem, N.C.: Fayetteville State University Men’s Basketball Team lost in first-round action to the Tigers of St. Pauls College 78-89. ' St. Pauls senior, Cleon Hill, went on an 8 of 9 perfor mance from the field while go ing 6-7 from the three-point line during the second half to lead the Tigers with 24 points and 2 steals in 10 minutes of play. The Broncos had five players in double figures. Senior Wayne Morris led FSU with 18 points. FSU, in sixth place in the South, finished with a 10-17 record on the year. “St. Pauls was clearly the better team today,” said Head Coach Ricky Duckett during an interview. In a brief conversation with Assistant Coach Curtis Hunter prior to the game, he com mented on the fact that “ex ecution” was going to ge a big factor in deciding the out come of that game. The news on the recruiting table is that they (FSU) are going for size in their recruiting efforts. The Broncos were hurt with the absence of Senior Donald Petree at 6’7" and Sophomore Alonzo Moore at 6’0". Fayetteville State won the Academic Award for the third year in a row, with the team having a cumulative GPA of 2.552. Because of their en deavors off the court. Nations Bank presented a $1,000 check to the FSU Athletic Scholarship Fund, along with the award. Individual congratulations go to freshman Phillip Allen, as he was placed on the ALL- CIAA Freshman Team. Allen was also ranked 7th in Assists in The CIAA with 3.8 per game. Junior Jason Tungstall ranked 7th in steals with 1.6 per game. Graduating senior, Wayne Morris, Jr. ranked 3rd in field-goal percentage with 56% on the year. FSU completed the season with the fifth best scoring mar gin; fourth in scoring defense,rebound margin, field goal percentage Defense; and fifth in 3-point field goals made with 6.3 per game. The Lady Spartanettes and the Spartans of Norfolk State University won the Coveted CIAA Championship during the 51st annual Tournament. The men defeated the Panthers of Virgina Union in an over time thriller while their coun terparts defeated the Lady Bears of Shaw University. The Lady Broncos The Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University de feated the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University 87-69 in second-round action of the CIAA Tournament. FSU ended the year with a 17- 10 record, which is one win shy of FSU’s record of 18-11 set last season under Head coach Eric Tucker. “Bowie just outplayed us today,” said Head Coach Eric Tucker of his Lady Broncos. FSU defeated St. Pauls in first-round action. Levonda Deloatch and Nattlie Pearson represented the Broncos in the 3 point shoot-out. Deloatch qualified for the second round of play. Freshman Guard Nattlie Pearson was appointed to the ALL-CIAA Rookie Team. Golf FSU is seeking its fourth consecutive CIAA Golf Championship in as many years. The Broncos competed in the Cheerwine-Alan Holden Realty Challenge in Holden Beach, NC. They finished 9th out of 19 teams. Preston Mulvene finished fifth overall in scoring to lead FSU to a fourth place finish in the Lee Nissan Barton Intercollegaiate Golf Tourna ment. University of North Carolina, North Carolina State and Barton College which fin ished first, second, and third, respectively. We finally got a mascot- FSU Softball splits pair Against Panthers The Ladies of the Bronco Softball team open their 1996 campaign with a (1-3) record on an away game with Claflin College.
