Broncos Voicc i—i March 1996 / Religion at FSU La’Tysha Bolden, a freshman student at FSU, is the new editor of the Broncos’ Voice “Religion ” section. We Need a Name! The religion section of the Broncos’ Voice needs a name. We need FSU students to help decide a name for the section that will represent the many different religious beliefs of students here at our university. The student with the best idea will receive a picture and write-up in the Religion section of our next edition. Come by or call the office (486-1357) or contact La’Tysha Bolden at 307-3219. GET THINKING! Bridging the Gap The purpose behind pro viding a religion section in The Voice is to broaden the hori zons of the campus and to con tinue to bring focus to all walks of people. Religion plays a large part in many people’s lives. It is the basis of motivation, the embodi ment of hope, one’s securer, keeper, or provider. Each re ligion is different and unique in its own way. The goal of this section is not to compare, contrast, criticize, promote nor demote any particular religion. The goal is to enlighten, broaden, and expand the knowledge of every reader about different religions. I will not begin to name religions; for there are so many and within that many, so much variety. My hopes are that you would, through this section, help to break down any stereo typical views about different religions. You are encouraged to submit articles, dates of events, inspirational verses, etc. This is your voice, this is your proclaimer. I would ask that all religious organizations submit something or contact me at (910) 307-3219. Invite your community churches and organizations to get involved with the campus b^ submitting articles to the paper. We have a gap to bridge, and here, we have the means to do just that; we now need the workers. Call For Religious Organizations There are many religious organizations on the FSU campus. We need to know what they are for them to receive fair representation in the Religion section. Here are the organizations we are currently familiar with: New Generations Campus Ministry Students Against a Godless Society United Voices of Praise: FSU Gospel Choir Dance Ministry Baptist Student Union If there are anu other religious organizations at FSU, please let us know. Your reaction is their only power.” Life is too short for us to fall apart every time some thing goes wrong. We must take the good with the bad. Life is not going to be a bed of roses-sometimes you will experience thorns. As a flower blooms, so will your life. You will grow, mature, go through rain, sleet, and snow, but after a while, the sun comes out. Sometimes you feel like giving up, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel. That is where God steps in. We are not on this earth to be burdened down, that is why Jesus died for our sins. When you have God in your life, you know that you know that you know things will work out. Faith is believing not^seeing. We as Blacks need to re member what has brought us through the most trying times in our life-God. There is noth ing wrong with R&B music, but that is not what they used to sing in the heat of the day in cotton field. God has been the heart of sow of African- Americans for quite a long time and the days we live in are no easier than they were then. So why should we turn our backs on the one who has been with us when nobody else was. God’s grace and mercy is taken for granted everyday. There are many of us who don’t give a second thought to waking up in the mornings a preparing for class. We fail to realize that there are many who awaken and wish they could get out of bed ore those who open their eyes and wish they could see. Christians, non-Christians, see “Bed, ” pg. 12 Twenty Years by La 'Tysha Bolden The Fayetteville State Uni versity Gospel Choir, United Voices of Praise, did just that on February 24, 1996: United their Voices to Praise God for twenty years of ministry. Seabrook Auditorium was filled with beautiful music and high praise on Saturday night. Choirs from all over came to support and help FSU’s Gospel choir send up praise. The Gospel Choir of FSU was organized by Rev. Rob ert Covington in the 1960’s. Choirs that joined in with the choir in Saturday included groups such as: Williams Chapel Young Adult Choir—Spring Lake, NC Reid Park Youth Choir--Char- lotte, NC Winston Salem State Univer sity Gospel Choir—Winston Salem, NC University of North Carolina at Charlotte—Charlotte, NC Campbell University Gospel Choir—Buies Creek, NC Alumni Gospel Choir of FSU East Carolina University Gos pel Choir (Special Guest)— Greenville, NC Good Hope Inspirational Gos pel Choir-Fayetteville, NC Desi Campbell and Friends- Charlotte, NC New Vision Ensemble-- Clinton, NC The FSU Gospel Choir is under the direction of Miss LaWanda Carter, a Junior and a Criminal Jus- lice Major. Miss Carter is the first female directress in the history of the choir. The Choir presently has 37 member on roll. They practice every Tuesday and Thursday at Seven PM in the choir room in the Rosenthal Building. Devotion starts at six - thirty. How did it begin? by La ’Tysha N. Bolden When it comes to the teaching of Creationism ver sus Evolution in any Science course, why is the idea of Evo lution more applicable to teach? Which takes prece dence over the other? What are the details that makes one any better than the other? This is my sole point. School officials say Cre ationism is not appropriate be cause it goes against some people’s beliefs; not ev eryone is a Chris- t i a n . This point is well taken. However, my question is why should those of us who are Christians be the ones made to learn something against our beliefs? Why is everyone else respected and not taught something against their be liefs, yet Christians and other religions are not respected enough to receive the same treatment. Evolution has been said to be more applicable because it is supported.by scientific facts. However, those very facts are [They] say Cjreationism ...goes against some people’sbetie^ not ev eryone is a Christian. themselves debated, contra dictory and disputed by the very scientists who perport to their validity. Books and ref erences support this claim even as scientists decry that life began or evolved from a single molecule or atom (what they call the Big Bang Theory). Evolution is a belief just as Creationism or any other idea or theory about how life originated. The fact is no one was there in the beginning of time, so no one knows ex actly what happened. I also question Evolution just as much as others question Creation- i s m . Where did that single molecule or atom come from? What made the molecule or atom start to change? How did a single molecule or atom evolve into trees, flowers, water, earth, soil, ants, fishes, dogs, bacte ria, gases, humans or any other organism or matter?
