His best sport ^eRo^ .tarred as a fullback, tackle and kicker. A product of the LeRoy Mills Football Kicking School, Gaines was one *e ^ ^ kickers and punters in New York. He was named Most Valuable High School Athlete in 1940. o at Mr.rth The fall of 1940 found Gaines among the Eagles at North Carolina College (Central). He made an immediate ™pact, winning All CIAA honors as a tackle. He followed this with berths on the All CIAA squad in 1941 and 1942. He was named All-American in and 1942 as a tackle and fullback.
