ill Mmmm wm m iicK i m i® A Tradition of Excellence Founded in 1867 as the Howard School, Fayetteville State University has helped'thousands of young men and women develop their talents to readily compete successfully in business, health services, education, law, politics, management and many other careers. A historically Black university and the second-oldest public institution of higher education in the state, Fayetteville State provides a comfortable atmosphere and a welcoming hand to students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. For more than a century, those who have completed FSU’s rigorous academic programs have emerged ready to join that special fellowship of educated men and women who aspire to become leaders in their communities; to advance the frontiers of knowledge and teaching; and to control their own destinies. FSU is one of 16 institutions associated with the University of North Carolina, and upholds the educational standards of the nation’s oldest public university. With challenging academic programs, close personal attention, a range of student support services, and a multicultural campus community, FSU will help prepare you for success! We’re Committed to Your Success V FSU is one of North Carolina’s fastest-growing institutions of higher education. Expansion of campus facilities and growth of the student body have been accompanied by improvements in every aspect of university life. Today, FSU is ideally positioned to offer an array of outstanding programs and services to high school graduates, transfer students, nontraditional students who seek expanded career opportunities, and to those pursuing graduate studies. While our growth has made new educational resources available, FSU is still small enough to consider the individual needs and concerns of all its students. FSU is committed to the success of its students. A strong core curriculum, offered through the University College, prepares students for upper- level course work. All new undergraduate students are required to take a university studies course that helps them develop their time-management, note-t^dng, study, and reading comprehension skills, which are critical to academic success. Every entering FSU freshman is assigned a faculty “mentor” who guides the student through the college experience. FSU’s mentoring program has won a national award for its success in helping students effectively make the transition from high school to university life and to persist through graduation. To further assure'students’ success, FSU provides tutoring in mathematics, the sciences, critical thinking and English. Specific instruction in test-taking and study skills, as well as counseling to help with personal, financial, career, graduate school and other educational decisions, are readily available. We Put Teaching and Scholarship First At larger universities, many professors leave most of the classroom teaching to graduate students while they pursue research projects. At FSU, the professors do the teaching. The student-to-faculty ratio at FSU is approximately 20-to-l. Nearly 80 percent of full-time faculty members hold doctoral degrees, one of the highest percentages among degree-granting institutions in North Carolina. FSU professors are accessible to students to expand and clarify classroom instruction, to answer questions, and to engage in discussion of ideas and issues of importance. In the belief that a university is a community of scholars and that students’ lives are forever enriched by exposure to gifted faculty of proven scholarship and achievement, FSU has brought together dedicated, talented teachers from many disciplines. The faculty includes eminent authors and professors who have received the highest awards in North Carolina for teaching in their disciplines. Many faculty members involve students in research projects funded by agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education, NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Rockefeller Foundation. Students also benefit from exposure to high achievers who are invited to visit the FSU campus to lecture and interact with students all year long. FSU Alumni: Making Contributions FSU graduates are proving themselves and making valuable contributions to society. You will find FSU alumni in professions in the halls of government, in the executive suites of the nation’s largest corporations, in entrepreneurial enterprises, in teaching and administration of public schools, in the officers’ corps of the military, in theater and the arts, and in the health professions. FSU alumni include leaders in the fields of law, education, business, health, management, politics, and others. We are proud of our many alumni who have achieved “firsts,” such as the first black woman elected to the South Carolina Senate; the youngest judge presiding in a U.S. District Court in North Carolina; and the first Black woman to serve as a Director of Athletics at an NCAA Division I university. Student Life and Culture The university is located in historic Fayetteville, North Carolina’s fourth-largest city. Fayetteville is a lively, warm community centrally located near 1-95. The Research Triangle area and the Atlantic coast are both within an hour-and-a-half drive. While the main goals at FSU center around achievement in academics, campus life is not limited to books and study. As the most diverse, multi-cultural student body within the greater university system, FSU brings together a delightful mixture of people and personalities. Dozens of student organizations offer opportunities to participate in all kinds of extracurricular activifies. Students are involved in publishing, theater, community service, music, modeling, religion, dance and politics, as well as making lifelong friends through fraternities and sororities.
