FSU In The Community FSU Cheerleaders Football and basketball are rough sports, but they would not be the same.without the woman’s touch. Bronco Cheerleaders have been around since the ‘40s. They have helped to propel Bronco teams to victory over the years. There is little available information on cheerleaders. They have been a cross section of the student body. One former cheerleader, Valery Jones, is a radio personality. Another, Dr. Vivian Fuller, is athletic director at Northeastern lUinois University, the first Black woman in the country to become athletic director of a Division I school. After a brief period of decrease interest in cheerleading, the squad was revived by Patrice Gilham in 1987. She was replaced in 1988 by Maceo Esquiline, and Rita Adams is the cheerleading coach today.* Dr. Vivian Fuller, Class of 1977 ^ FSU Cheerleaders pose with the Marching Bronco Band in 1962. FSU graduates prominent in our communities The Fayetteville-Cumberland County has profited from the presence of Fayetteville State. There are FSU graduates and administrators in nearly; every possible area of business, education and politics. They are leadin^u; the way into the 21st century and setting an example for present and. future Broncos. At present, Robert Massey sits on the Fayetteville City Council. He- occupies the seat that was once held by the late Emeretta Felton. Thomas' Bacote, a recently retired professor, serves as chairman of the Cumberland County Commission. Mary McAllister is serving in the State House. Dr. Jessie Williams is the director of the Department of Health for the county. Nearly every school in the county system has an FSU grad on its staff, with several serving as principal. There are others, including Jack Freeman and Jeanette Council, serving in the upper levels' of the County Education Administration. This group will continue to grow as more and more Broncos move out into the “real” world. They are setting an example for their fellow Broncos to follow. These, and others, are but,a sample of Fayetteville State graduates serving their communities.'
