Funding is available for stu dents interested in pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees in such areas as nuclear engineer ing, health physics, and indus trial hygiene. Graduate fellow ship programs sponsored by DOE and administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Sci ence and Education provide full payment of tuition and fees, monthly stipends, and the opportunity to gain practical experience at a DOE labora tory. Awards vary depending on the specific program and the degree being pursued. All programs require the submis sion of a fellowship applica tion and completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students must have recieved their undergraduate degrees in a science or engi neering discipline by August 1997. Selection is based on academic performance, rec ommendations, and a state ment of career goals by the applicant. Fellowship applications are being offered taken through Jan.27,1997, and awards will be announced in April 1997. For applications or additional information, contact Milton Constantin or Mary Kinney, (423) 576-7009, ORISE Fel lowship Programs, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Edu cation, and Training Division, RO. Graduate Research Opportunities Announced The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Graduate Stu dent Research Participation Program (GSRP) is offering graduate students the chance to spend one to twelve months collaborating with federal sci entists on the cutting edge of research and development. One of several programs of fered through the University- DOE Laboratory Cooperative Science Education Program and managed by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, the GSRP is for Graduate students enrolled in programs leading to a master’s degree or Ph.D. in engineer ing, physical or life sciences, mathematics, computer sci ence, or social sciences. With direction from researchers at major DOE facilities, students conducted hands-on research using state-of-the-art equip ment not usually found on most campus laboratories. Projects relate to individual academic majors, career goals, and the ongoing research and development of facility. Stu dents are selected by the DOE facility staff on the basis of academic record, research in terest, and the recommenda tion of instructors. Participating DOE facili ties include the Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Di vision, ORISE, Oak Ridge Na tional Laboratory, the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant and K-25 Site, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Pitts burgh Energy Technology Center, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Savan nah River Archaeological Re search Program, and Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, Sa vannah River Site, Aiken, S.C.; Thomas Jefferson Na tional Accelerator Facility, Newport News, Va.; and Tri angle Universities Nuclear Laboratory, Duke University, Durham, N.C. Certain travel expenses are reimbursed, and stipends of $370 to $395 per week will be paid to participants. Applica tions are accepted year-round. For application materials or additional information, please contact Barbara Dorsey at (423) 576-9975, or write to the Graduate Student Research Participation Program, OakRidge Institute for Science and Education, and Training Division, P.O. Box 117, Oak Ridge, TN. 37831-0117. Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunities Announced The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Student Re search Participation Program (SRP) is offering undergradu ate students the chance to spend 10 weeks next summer collaborating with federal sci entists on the cutting edge of research and development. One of several programs of fered through DOE’s Univer- sity-DOE Laboratory Coop erative Science Education Pro gram and managed by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), The SRP is for sophomores, juniors and seniors majoring in engineer ing, physical and life sciences, mathematics, computer sci ence or social sciences. With direction from researchers at major DOE facilities, students conduct hands-on research us ing state-of-the-art equipment not usually found in most cam pus laboratories. Projects re late to individual academic majors, career goals, and the ongoing research and develop ment of the facility. Students are selected by the DOE facil ity staff on the basis of aca demic record, aptitude, re search interest, and the recom mendation of instructors. Par ticipants must have the poten tial for graduate study and sci entific careers. Participating DOE facili ties include the Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Di vision, ORISE, Oak Ridge Na tional Laboratory, the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant and K-25 Site, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Pitts burgh Energy Technology Center, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Savan nah River Archaeological Re search Program, and Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, Sa vannah River Site, Aiken, S.C.; Thomas Jefferson Na tional Accelerator Facility, Newport News, Va.; and Tri angle Universities Nuclear Laboratory, Duke University, Durham, N.C. Certain travel expenses are reimbursed, and stipends of $250 per week for seniors, $225 per week for juniors, and $200 per week for sophomores will be paid to participants. The application deadline is January 21,1997. DOE Science and Engineer ing Research Semester Of fers Cutting-Edge Research to College Juniors and Se niors If you are a sophomore, junior, or senior studying com puter science, engineering, physics, environmental and life sciences, mathematics or physical science, the Science and Engineering Research Se mesters (SERS) offers you the unique opportunity to do hands-on research laboratories during the academic year. The U.S Department of En ergy (DOE) is sponsoring the program to encourage un dergraduate stu dents to con- tinue their stud ies in science and engi- neering. More than 400 students annually re ceive SERS ap pointment at on of the participating laboratories. These laboratories include Argoone located out side Chicago: Brookhaven on Long Island, N.Y.; Lawrence Livemore at Livmore, Calif,; Los Alamos National Labora tory in New Mexico; Oak Ridge National Laboratory lo cated in Tennessee; and Pacific Northwest in Washington state. The SERS program offers an attractive financial package in addition to the valuable laboratory contacts and expe rience. Housing, including utilities, is furnished, thereby bringing the total value of your award to approximately $1,600 per month, depending on location. Transportation ex penses are reimbursed for one round trip to the research fa cility. In addition to research par ticipation, most laboratories offer courses on site or at nearby universities to help stu dents fulfill graduation re quirements while participating in the program. The tuition for one course per student may be paid by the program, adding to the value of the appointment. The majority of past participants have also received credit from their home university for the re search experiences. Participat ing laboratories are happy lo work with schools to assist in making this arrangement. aim high FOR CAREER SUCCESS.
