The Broncos’ Voice ^ December 5, 1997 ^ FSU NEWS Faculty in The Spotlight Dr. Juliette Bell, Director of FSU’s Biomedical Re search Program, has been named one of four national “Giants in Science” by the Quality Education for Minori ties Network. Giants in Sci ence awards recognize indi viduals who are outstanding mentors, teachers and re searchers. Dr. Bell was also recently recognized with the 1997 national Distinguished Research Award from NAFEO for her work in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. FSU Announces Undergraduates Selected for Who’s Who The 1998 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges will include the names of 62 undergraduate students from Fayetteville State University who have been selected as national out standing leaders. These FSU students join an elite group of students selected from more than 1900 institu tions of higher learning in a 50 states, the District of Co lumbia and several foreign na tions. Sport’s Spotlight FSU’s Schavonne Brown was named to the Fayetteville State Invitational volleyball all-tournament team. She had 25 kills, 76 total attacks, 38 digs and 13 blocks. FSU’s Demeco Archangel was named Don Hansen’s Football Gazette special teams national player of the week. Archangel returned seven kickoffs for 151 yards and one punt for 65 yards against Vir ginia State. He also caught four passes for 90 yards and a TD. FSU APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR OF POLICE AND PUBLIC SAFETY Jerry L. Monroe, an alum nus of Fayetteville State Uni versity, has been named as the new Director of Police and Public Safety at the university. Chief Monroe began his duties on October 8. Chief Monroe earned a B. A. in Political Science with a minor in Police Science at FSU in 1986. He comes to FSU from the Town of Wagrum, NC, where he served as Chief of Police from 1994 to the present. He has also taught in the Scotland Count Schools; was an Alcohol Law Enforcement Agent with the NC department of Crime Con trol and Public Safety from 1988-1993, and served as crime Technician in the Fayetteville Police Depart ment from 1986-1988. Monroe is active in numer ous professional and civic or ganizations, including the Na tional Association of Chiefs of Police, the Police Executives Association, Law Enforce ment Planners Association, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. It has been more than 20 years since a Fayetteville State University Concert Choir has released a recording. The CD, “Sing ‘Til The Spirit Moves Into My Heart,” was recorded at John Wesley United Methodist Church. The cost is S15 for the CD, and $ 10 for a cassette. Proceeds will be used to help finance the choir’s spring trip to Europe, where the group will present concerts in France and Belgium. This collection of sacred recordings will be available from the Department of Fine Arts and Humanities For more information or to order a copy, call 486-1571 or 486-1276. The FSU Concert Choir is under the direction of Dr. Marvin Curtis. Broncos In The Spotlight Miss Tammy Burroughs, a senior majoring in Biology and a Glaxo Women in Sci ence Scholar, is the 1997 re cipient of a national award for Excellence in Mathematics and/ or Science from the qual ity Education for Minorities/ Mathematics and Science Education Network. Miss Burroughs has presented her DNA research projects at con ferences in Mexico, Miami, and other cities around the country. In 1995, she traveled to Helsinki, Finland for a ten- week fellowship in Plant Physiology in the Minorities’ Global Research in Progress Program at the University of Helsinki. She was also re cently recognized for her lead ership efforts with the Ntional Collegiate Minority Leader ship Award. Mr. Demarco Jeter, a Chancellor’s Scholar and foot ball player, has been named as a Coca-Cola USA Sports View Scholar/Athlete for the fourth year in a row. Misses Dorthe Hender son, Tameka Kenan, and Kimberly Burney traveled to Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania to compete in the 12th Annual Through the Looking Glass individual events novice forensics tour nament in September. Miss henderson took top honors in poetry interpretation, and Miss Kenan placed seventh and Miss Bumey tenth in the same event. Miss Henderson also earned a second-place award in the prose interpretation competition.
