community,” Bray said. “It’s not
just to get into the games, but they
feel like part of the school.”
Plans are in the works for the
band to visit high schools and in
return, have the high schools perform
at FSU at times other than
homecoming.
“We may invite a band where we
want to recruit some of their
Speaker
students,” Bray said.
Bray has a national reputation for
building quality marching band
programs. He turned Alabama State
University in Montgomery, and
Bethune-Cookman College in
Daytona Beach, Fla., into two of the
premiere black college bands in the
countr) . He feels he can do the same
with the FSU band.

“As old as 1 am, I don’t have any
long-term goals,” Bray said. “But for
the program, it is to get the caliber of
recruits we really want as opposed
to those w'ho just want to come. We
also want assistants who want to be
part of a totally comprehensive band
program, and cultivate the
community to allow our constituents
to know what a college band doess.”

chapter plans to do just that.
Their vision for the year
2001 -02 is getting the
community involved with their
choice of service projects.
“Our primary goal is
getting involved with
community-based projects
designed to bring the students
and community together as a
whole,” said Devian Blocker,
president of FSU’s Sigina
Gamma Rho Chapter.
Some of their projects
include “Operation Big
Bookbag,” a program to get
school supplies to needy

project which educates youth
on budgeting their money and
other financial matters. In
November, expect to see the
chapter involved with politics.
“We want to overall
provide a positive
representation to impact the
student body for the better,”
Blocker said.

Omega Psi Phi
returned to FSU Spring
2001, presenting 23 men.
The Omegas are working
hard to dispel stereotypes
and erase the doubts that
people may have about them.
Many people are expecting
them to repeat those past
mistakes, said Claymonte
McNeill, president of the
Delta Gamma Chapter of
Omega Psi Phi.
“It’s expected, because of
what happened in the past.
But now we are maintaining
an image of what OMEGA
men are instead of the stigma
of Q’s,” McNeill said.
The Delta Gamma
Chapter held an HI V-AIDS

also a raffle for a Playstation

The number of new freshmen at
FSU is 767, a 40.5 percent increase
over fall 2000. The number of
freshmen currently residing on campus
has also exceeded the amount from fall
2000, which are approximately 570
students.
Every spring semester returning
students have an opportunity to go
through the room assigning process for
their room the following fall. This then
determines hov\ many spaces can be
used for first time freshmen. After
recei\ ing freshmen applications, which
were well over the amount of allotted
space available, the Residence Life
department made a decision to use
Hood Hall as a freshmen female hall
this year, along with Williams Hall.
Upper class females from Hood and
Harris Halls moved to the Best Western
hotel on Bragg BK d. “The girls loved
it, the) didn't have a problem with
moving,” stated Florence Mitchell, the
Resident Director for the Best Western.
There are 589 upperclassmen residing
on campus and 86 upper-class women
at the Best Western.
Another new setup this year at
FSU is Bryant Hall being a coed dorm.
Bryant Hall is a majority sophomore
hall along with Harris Hall. This was
done to try out a new program initiated
this year called Sophomore Hall. Fred
Sapp, the director for the Center for
Personal Development, coordinates the
program.
“The Sophomore Hall program is
designed to meet the needs of the
second-year students, the Halls will
provide academic support, intellectual
and social activities and other
opportunities for its occupants,”
explained Mr. Sapp.
The Sophomore Hall program will
address the concerns that have
continued to pose problems for
sophomore students; declaring a major,
choosing careers, enhancing study
habits, etc.
The Hall will also have an academic
advisor and a counselor for personal
concerns.
