Blue Ice Sends Chill
Through FSU Campus

Have you ever thought about
becoming a member of Cheer
Phi Smoov, FSU’s cheerleading
squad, but decided against it
because it’s too time
consuming? Maybe, you can’t
do a spht, or your toe-touch isn’t
up to par, but you do have a
strong, powerful, cheerleader
voice, and you are fiill of school
spirit. Blue Ice, FSU’s new spirit
team, may be the perfect
alternative.
Blue Ice made their first debut
during the past FSU vs. WSSU
football game. The team
caused quite a buzz. The
team’s duty is to assist the
cheerleaders with their cheers,
and to help motivate the crowd.
Coach LaWanda Miller, the
coach of Cheer Phi Smoov, is
the creator of Blue Ice.
“The purpose of this team is
to put together a good group of
ladies who would like to know
w hat being an FSU cheerleader
is all about. Some ladies have
time limitations that prevent
them from being a cheerleader,
especially when you consider
that FSU cheerleaders practice

'Piano Lesson'
Hits High Note

The Fayetteville State
University Theatre Company
and The Department of
Performing Arts presented
August Wilson’s award
winning Broadway play, The
Piano Lesson, which covers
the importance of family
heritage, unity, financial
independence, and other
issues that face African
Americans.
The play takes place in the
mid 1930’s and starts with the
coming of Boy Willie, (Terrell
Bolden), visiting his sister
Berniece, (Cameshala
Phillips), in Pittsburgh. Boy
Willie claims he is just visiting
to sell a truck load of
watermelons; hiding his
ulterior motive which is to sell
the inherited piano to obtain
money to purchase Mississippi
land that his ancestors once
worked on.
The piano, however, was
traded for Berniece and Boy
Willie’s parents by a slave
master. Their father
eventually stole the piano and
kept it as a family prize
possession. The piano
contains carvings that marks
a family time‘line such as
marriages, births, and deaths.

plays about two young lovers

For this reason, Berniece
refuses to sell the piano
arguing that it is a reminiscent
of their family’s past and out
of respect needs to stay within
the family.
Though Boy Willie and
Berniece both have good
reasons to their arguments, all
the ruckus and controversy
summons up a ghost (the slave
owner) to haunt the family.
The play exercised a very
humorous exorcist performed
by preacher of the Good
Shepard Church, Avery
(Duane Flowers).
Other performers included:
Doaker (Guy Outlaw), Lymon
(Curtis Majette), Wining Boy
(Carl Grant), Maretha (Harley
Dee Flora), and Grace
(Wanshienda “Osa” Tatum).
The play was directed by:
Harmon Watson (artistic),
James Knight (Technical),
and the stage manager was
Tiffany Hoggard.
The play overall was good,
combining humor with
important messages, and the
performers and director
brought the play to life. “This
play was very long, but I’m
glad I came out...it was worth
seeing and I look forward to
the next play," says sophomore
Alicia Snead.
