J School News ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Premieres Blue Ice performs at CIAA Basketball promotion Blue Ice Sends Chill Through FSU Campus By LaKeshia Denson Staff Writer Have you ever thought about becoming a member of Cheer Phi Smoov, FSU’s cheerleading squad, but decided against it because it’s too time consuming? Maybe, you can’t do a spht, or your toe-touch isn’t up to par, but you do have a strong, powerful, cheerleader voice, and you are fiill of school spirit. Blue Ice, FSU’s new spirit team, may be the perfect alternative. Blue Ice made their first debut during the past FSU vs. WSSU football game. The team caused quite a buzz. The team’s duty is to assist the cheerleaders with their cheers, and to help motivate the crowd. Coach LaWanda Miller, the coach of Cheer Phi Smoov, is the creator of Blue Ice. “The purpose of this team is to put together a good group of ladies who would like to know w hat being an FSU cheerleader is all about. Some ladies have time limitations that prevent them from being a cheerleader, especially when you consider that FSU cheerleaders practice between three or maybe five See Ice Page 8 'Piano Lesson' Hits High Note By Dawn Redrick Staff Writer The Fayetteville State University Theatre Company and The Department of Performing Arts presented August Wilson’s award winning Broadway play, The Piano Lesson, which covers the importance of family heritage, unity, financial independence, and other issues that face African Americans. The play takes place in the mid 1930’s and starts with the coming of Boy Willie, (Terrell Bolden), visiting his sister Berniece, (Cameshala Phillips), in Pittsburgh. Boy Willie claims he is just visiting to sell a truck load of watermelons; hiding his ulterior motive which is to sell the inherited piano to obtain money to purchase Mississippi land that his ancestors once worked on. The piano, however, was traded for Berniece and Boy Willie’s parents by a slave master. Their father eventually stole the piano and kept it as a family prize possession. The piano contains carvings that marks a family time‘line such as marriages, births, and deaths. By Tiffany Morin Correspondent The FSU Theatre Company will soon be presenting Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at the Butler Little Theater on November 15, 16 and 17 at 7:30 pm. Those who attend will learn that this is no ordinary version of Romeo and Juliet. In this version. Director Phoebe Hall has decided to set the play in the summer of 1965, in the Projects during the SPRING BREAK EVSANIH! \VWW’1NTER-CAMPUS.C0M Watts Riots in South Central Los Angeles. The actors are very excited about the performance. “I believe this play will be cutting edge,” says Kevin McCrimmon who plays Tybalt, the cousin of Juliet. The Watts Riots occurred when a crowd of onlookers saw a routine traffic stop result in officers with batons beating two African American men. This action was the final blow to the community already plagued by unemployment. unsuitable housing and inferior schools. The onlookers responded with violence, causing the riots that left 34 persons dead and over a thousand injured. In Hall’s vision, Romeo and Juliet find themselves in the middle of this action. Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most well known plays about two young lovers whose families are feuding. Though Boy Willie and Berniece both have good reasons to their arguments, all the ruckus and controversy summons up a ghost (the slave owner) to haunt the family. The play exercised a very humorous exorcist performed by preacher of the Good Shepard Church, Avery (Duane Flowers). Other performers included: Doaker (Guy Outlaw), Lymon (Curtis Majette), Wining Boy (Carl Grant), Maretha (Harley Dee Flora), and Grace (Wanshienda “Osa” Tatum). The play was directed by: Harmon Watson (artistic), James Knight (Technical), and the stage manager was Tiffany Hoggard. The play overall was good, combining humor with important messages, and the performers and director brought the play to life. “This play was very long, but I’m glad I came out...it was worth seeing and I look forward to the next play," says sophomore Alicia Snead.
