6 Happenings Lina Performs At Hip-Hop Tour By Lisa Augusrine Staff'Writer We have Heard her single ‘It’s Alright,’on 99.1 or 104.5. Maybe you have seen her video on BET, MTV, or CTN while in the cafeteria satisfying your hunger. Atlantic recording artist Lina visited Fayetteville State University, one of the sites on her nationwide promotional tour for her new album, "Stranger on Earth, ” in stores now. The interview took place in the student radio station, WFSB Hot 98.5FM. Afterwards, Lina performed her hit single, 'It’s Alright,’ for the crowd at the CIAA Hip-Hop Tour event. The single is collaboration with Philly’s Most Wanted Boobonic. When asked about how the collaboration came about she replied, “Its crazy...I needed a rapper on ‘It’s Alright’, we had big names that did rap on it, but I liked Boo’s rap. His rap was the one that appealed most to me. I told him, ‘you sound like a cross between Tupac and Jay Z’, those are my two favorite artists.” Lina added, “I didn’t really trip off the big names, I chose whoever felt good to me.” She wants to “slow it down” with her next single “Waiting.” Lina began singing, like many other artists, at a young age in her church. She then graduated to signing at special occasions, for example weddings. After graduating from high school, Lina began a career in writing; she made demo’s in her spare time. Her Carolina^^S'Uc; Lina sings for FSU crowd manager convinced her to distribute her demos, not seriously, just to see what offers she would get. She got one she could not refuse, an offer to sign with Atlantic records. Lina’s song-writing achievements include writing for singer Tyrese’s recent platinum album. In addition to that, Lina has been touring Europe with Gangstar (Guru) and DJ Premier, and appearing in many magazines such as Ebony and Essence. Lina describes her unique style as “the past, and the present and I guess the future of music, because hopefully with this music, I will inspire people to be more creative Lauren Christian, a junior from Fayetteville, was crowned FSU’s Classiest Lady. The event was sponsered by the Epsilon Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. and more original and not try to fit the mold of what people think it [music] should be.” Some of her major influences are Duke Ellington, Louie Armstrong, Billy Holiday, Jay Z, Whitney Houston and the late Aaliyah, just to name a few. Lina added, “1 am a huge Aaliyah fan.” In the future she would like to work with Bilal, Tank, The Roots, Musiq Soul Child and Moby. Soon her writing and singing career may lead to acting. She has been offered acting roles because of the fame accompanying her CD, and she is currently auditioning for parts. She wants to play “strong black woman roles...a role that will make you leave the theater with something meaningful.” Lina’s advice for artists trying to crack into the business is, “definitely believe in yourself because everyone is going to have an opinion and everyone is going to jump on the bandwagon of what is selling and say it is the hottest thing but it may not necessarily be. Try not to be cheap or a follower, be yourself and be original. Don’t try to fit the blueprint, go against the grain. It makes you stand out and it makes you true to yourself. We don’t always want another clone of somebody else.” For more about Lina, visit her website at: Lina-Online.com Glass Mix-up Irks Diner Dear Advice Diva: The other night at dinner with my girlfriend and two of her friends, I noticed that my water glass seemed a bit empty but I drank from it anyhow. It was soon apparent why it looked empty: One of her friends had mistaken it for his, and was drinking from my glass. This friend happened to have a slight cold, and I immediately felt like I was being put on the spot. I wanted to ask for another glass, but was too self-conscious, as I had pointed out in a joking way that he had been using my water glass. After I mentioned it, he apologized and moved the glass closer to my part of the table, then started using his glass, which he had not yet used. Shouldn’t he have given me his untouched water glass, and continued using my “adopted” glass? My girlfriend says that I should have just asked the waiter for another water glass and not cared if it offended her friend. I think that he should have given me his glass. S.R. Dear S.R.: The Advice Diva thinks you and your girlfriend are both right — it would have been polite for the friend to offer you his untouched glass but, in the absence of this gesture, you had every right to ask the food server for a fresh glass of water.
