Intramural Program Relieves Boredom
By Garrett James
Staff Writer
If I had a dime for every time
I heard an FSU student say,
“Man, this school is so boring!”
I’d have a whole lot of dimes.
That however, has been
changing this semester. Not only
are all of our Greek
organizations active and
constantly hosting programs, but
also this semester has seen the
birth of an intramural sports
program. I had the pleasure of
speaking with Tim Heath, FSU’s
first full-time Intramural
Coordinator, as he enlightened
me concerning the intramural
sports program.
Mr. Heath explained that the
Intramural program is designed
to serve as an outlet for college
students to participate in sports
that they maybe otherwise
would not have been able to
participate in. Besides the fact
that it gives the students
something positive to keep them
from being bored, the program
also teaches students how to
work better as a team, how to
support each other, and it also
instills a sense of Bronco pride
in the students.
One of the fall intramural
sports, flag football, is currently
underway. This sport, also
known as the Bronco Flag
Football League or BFFL,
consists of seven teams and
there are three BFFL games
played on Monday evenings.
Mr. Heath expressed to me that
he initially expected only a few
guys to sign up and to only have
two or three teams. He was
pleasantly surprised and says
that along with the 50-100
spectators that surround the
playing field on Monday
evenings, the Dean of Students
and Vice Chancellor have been
out to support the games. This,
he said, also makes the students
feel good about what they are
doing and Mr. Heath hopes that
maybe in the near future.
Chancellor McLeod will be able
to come and watch a game or
two.
At the end of October we will
see the beginning of the
intramural girls’ volleyball
league. These games will be
played on Wednesday evenings
at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m.
Powder puff games are also in
the planning stage. These
games will consist of FSU senior
females vs. junior females and
freshmen vs. sophomores. Two
others in are basketball and
soccer. The basketball league
will be for both the males and
females and will start in the fall.
Mr. Heath also wants to see a
softball league, but says finding
a playing field is a drawback.
Critics of the intramural sports
program say that this is only
another avenue in which to
entice students away from their
studies. Mr. Heath answers
these critiques by saying, “I’m
an alumni of FSU and I played
football in the‘70’s. 1 would say
that my college experience was
well rounded being that I focused
on my academics and had the

chance to play college sports.
The atmosphere at an HBCU
is rare and unique and I wouldn’t
trade it for anything in the world.
If students do not experience the
social and ‘out-of-class’ side of
college, then their college
experience will go lacking in the
most part. Intramurals help them
/
to engage in things other than
just studies.”
Toward the end of my
interview with Mr. Heath, I
asked him, “Can it get any
better?” He said hopefully, and
stated that the future plans for
the intramural program are to
improve the commuter
participation and to focus on
activities for our faculty and
staff; they want to be involved
also. “Our main goal is to take
advantage of our great^
community to enhance the
program and to incorporate the
entire FSU community to make
the program better.”
