Sports Is Michael Jordan Still A Legend? By Anthony Keene, Jr. Stajf Writer There has been a lot of speculation on whether or not Jordan would return to the game with the same game that he left with regardless of his age and of the new changes in the game of basketball. The answer to that question remains to be pro\ ided by the fans. The great M.J. has had a great career and I really can't blame him for wanting to come back to the game to see if he’s still got it. Think about it. If you played in a sport here 3 0U dominated the game so many times that people got tired of seeing y ou win (including me), had received more trophies or rings than y ou can wear on one hand \\hile other teams struggle to win one. Then, you \\in the championship or the plav offs in > our retiring game, you still haA e people wearing y our jersey and buy ing your shoes years after >ou have retired, CAN YOU HONESTLY SAY THAT YOU WOULD PUT THE GAME DOWN? I think not. The man’s rich. He, in a matter of speaking, has done e^ er\thing that he could e^ er want to do with money; and let’s not forget him ha\ing his name added to the hall of fame. A couple of years ago, a TV program reAealed how people o\ erseas feel about Jordan. Just like the other M.J. they consider him almost god-like. There is no v/ay that he could stay awaj' f'om the game. Jordan used to be a skinny guy who w as light on his fset. He would finesse his way past his opponent and out smart him to either driA e to the goal and draw the foul along with it, or r I / \RI Many obseners say Michael Jordan may have lost a step, but the skills are still there. he would hit them with his signature Jordan fade aw a\'. One w ay or the other he would make the score. Still you can’t lea^e out the team. Jordan had the picture perfect team with the perfect sidekick. Scottie Pippin. The Bulls were the dominating team to beat for a while. Most of the team was good, e\ en the players that didn’t get much spotlight. Face it, Jordan couldn’t do the whole thing b}' himself even when Scottie wasn’t there. The presence of other players who were equipped to produce on the court left someone who could put the ball back up. Truly, if Jordan had been injured I think the Bulls could of held their own FOR A WHILE. When it comes down The Home Depot now hiring for night crew positions! t —■ - ■ -■ ■ That’s right! Now the up-to-date question is can Jordan do it without the team he had, without the sidekick? And if so is he w hat he use to be? Can he dri^e to the goal and still make the three-point play. (Notorious for scoring and gettmg the foul shot) Can he still a^ erage 45 points a game? The results speak for themselves, some are positi\e and some are negative. You KNOW that y ou are famous when they put you on ESPN for throw ing up an air ball. I'm sorry to say it, but e^■en I think that due to things out of his control Jordan w ill not be able to play like the “old” Jordan. After all he is not as young as he used to be. Still I think that it’s best to let his game speak for itself. Jordan has had to change the w ay that he pla> s to fit the w a}' that the game has changed. Jordan not only has the problem of being awa> from the game to make up for, but he also has a different breed of ball players to wony about. They are not the same size that the\’ use to be. That is, more muscle and less finesse. If you know am thing about Shaq then you know w hat I mean. Instead of making a lot of nice moA es to the goal, they use theirs size to their ad\ antage and power their w ay to the goal. If you don’t have that size, like Iverson, then y ou haA e to ha\ e a nice array of mo^ es to out smart the opposition and dri\ e to the goal or make the point. Also Jordan has to depend on the w hole team a little more. Unlike Kobe, he doesn’t ha\e a man to pair up w ith to form a d^Tiamic duo. Jordan does on the other hand, has his w a>- of fmding the strong points of his teammates and ha\ ing the pla> ers help each other w here the other falls short. He uses this to his ad\ antage to help the team pla> better. It seems like it is w orking cause in his first game it was whack and anno> ing how e\ ery time one of his tearmnates got the chance, he w ould throw Jordan the ball like a small child who needed adult supervision to walk across the street. The other team w ould just end up double-teaming him. After a w hile, the\ stopped doing it and just placed the game. Besides Jordan’s still a little rust}. An> one who has seen him can tell that he’s getting old. Still there are some good things about his game. He's had to change his form fi-om a slimed down speed} \ersion to a more bulky slow er a ersion to fend off bigger players that might tr} to bump him off his game or o\ er power him to the shot. Jordan is now more of a shooter than a dri^ er. He is more than likeh to moAe around and wait till he shakes you and instead of dri^ ing to the goal he is more than likely to pop the shot. Also he depends on the team more. He passes the ball to open pla} ers, and instead of shooting all the time, he is letting the team take the team up. In so mam words, he’s gi^ ing the spotlight to the others to share. Still another thing that w as noticed was that Jordan has stayed out of the waj of the press. He hasn’t been talking to reporters a lot. Also did I mention that I heard that he’s pla\ ing for free*^ I don’t know if it is true, but I heard that his pa}- is going to help the ^ ictims of the Sept. II* incident.
