8 Campus Spotlight
Postal Workers On Guard Against Anthrax
Bj Garrett N. James
Staff Writer
If there's one department
that I feel is under appreciated
on the campus, it’s Newbold
Station, better known as the
campus post office. I had the
pleasure of speaking with Mrs.
Lula Oliver, our campus
mailroom superv isor.
Contrary to what I feel,
Mrs. Lula said that she felt
really appreciated. “I strive for
good rapport with all,
especially the students. I tr>
to treat them like adults and
keep them informed because
keeping information doesn't
help an>.”
I could tell earh on that I
would enjo\ talking with Mrs.
Lula and this is how our
interview went.
How did you feel when
you first heard about
Anthrax and how dangerous
it was?
Oh gracious. Naturally, I
was concerned about health
safet} for all of our workers.
At first, I \^ as ver\' frightened
and scared thinking that our
mail could be contaminated in
any wa}’. On the other hand, I
was faithfiil in m>- God and we
immediately started to follow
all of the proper precautions
sent from our main office.
What were those
precautions?
We now tr}' to wear gloves
at all times and especially
A\hen mail comes in. We also
have masks to wear when
handling mail. It sounds rough,
but the gloves are nice and the
masks are ventilated, so that
eases the trouble.
What can students do to
be safe?
The students should be
aware of anything they receive
that is unexpected, has no
return address, appears
lopsided, or has leakage.
Other signs to watch for are
excessive postage, if the
package is marked
confidential, or marked for
someone else. If a student
experiences an\- one of these,
he/she should bring the package
back immediately. The student
can contact the person on dut>’
and we will follow the
necessarj guidelines.
Is this information
available to the students?
Notices are currently
posted in our post oflFice. As
soon as availabilitj' permits, a
set of precautions will go into
each student's mailbox.
On another note, I’ve
heard students often
complain about late mail,
how do you respond to this?
Fve personalh' talked to our
main office and the business
office concerning how mail is
delivered late almost ever} day.
When we finally do get it, we
have to hurriedl}- distribute and
also take the necessarj'
precautions. I tn, to talk «ith
the students one on one and
explain our situation. We talk
about how mail is delivered late
and it’s out of our hands and that
it takes about 2 hours to sort the
mail and get it properh placed.
With only a staff of three, I tr\-
to make sure that I am here to
get the mail out as quickl}- as
possible. Students are the
reason we are here and I do all
I can to help them understand.
If a student has an issue,
problem, concern, or question,
what do you suggest they do?
First of all. I would like for
them to come and talk ^\ith me.
And then if the} ’re not satisfied.
I ^^^ll direct them to m} supervisor
The Student Body President,
Kendrick Faison, expressed
complaints concerning extending
the mailroom hours. He has \ et
to follo-\\ through so that we can
talk \Mth m} supervisor to make
things better. Dean Scurr} was
also informed of tlie concerns and
he instructed me to collect a list
of the concerns and to get back
with him, but I don’t know
what happened. I’m sure that
it deserves a tr} .
For the last question
Mrs. Olivia, if there were
one thing that you could
change or make better
concerning the mailroom,
what would it be?
Well, I would like the
mailroom to be a better serv ice
organization. And to all of the
students, if there is amthing
that I can do. I'm alwa} s here
and read}- to listen.
B}- the end of our interv iew,
I realized how much of a
caring person we have
supervising our mailroom.
The other dedicated
workers at our post office are
Angela Williams, Demetrius
Williams, and Erica Mitchell,
the student worker.
The post office door is
opened from Sam to 5pm M-F
and from 9 a.m. to noon on
Saturda}.

the lower level of the Rudolph
Jones Student Center. The

FSU’s Cross Country
team’s performance this past
season reflected growth from
last year. “The team uTiproved
tremendously from last year.
Most of our top performers are
graduating and the need to
recruit more teammates is very
important, but it is difficult at
times considering that there are
not any scholarships available in
the program,” said Coach Mike
Gibson. Coach Gibson’s goal
for next year includes recruiting
new runners as well as
improving the records set this
year which was completing the
season as eighth in the
conference. Toshanika Moore
finished the season among the
top ten runners in the
conference. “I enjoyed the
season. It felt good to represent
FSU, and to be an example that
we can perform very well, ” said
Moore. Members of the 2001
Cross Country Team are:
